Weekly Ketchup: Mark Wahlberg To Star In Transformers 4
The week in Hollywood movie development news -- following last week's announcement of Disney's plans for Star Wars Episode VII -- seemed almost late-August-like in terms of relative activity. What did make the news this week included stories about The Giver, Tarzan, Transformers 4, the not-going-to-happen-anymore sequel to Top Gun, and yes, indeed, more stories about Star Wars Episode VII.

Five Favorite Films with Megan Fox
It wasn't too long ago that Megan Fox found herself at the dizzying center of the celebrity maelstrom. Through no particular fault of her own, she was teetering on the brink of media overexposure -- the kind that comes from the usual perception of someone (and more often an actress) suddenly becoming too big, and too fast. Fox's well-publicized (and rather humorous) feud with her Transformers director Michael Bay lead to her being dismissed from the third installment (quick: try and remember the name of her replacement), while her would-be star vehicle -- the hopelessly misunderstood Jennifer's Body -- bombed with critics and audiences. Yet Fox's career is taking an arguably more interesting turn now that the white light of scrutiny has subsided: she's got roles in Judd Apatow's Knocked Up sequel This is 40 and Sacha Baron Cohen's The Dictator on the way, and this week stars as part of the ensemble cast of Jennifer Westfeldt's Friends with Kids. In the well-received comedy-drama, Fox plays Mary Jane, the much-younger girlfriend of single-dad-with-a-twist Adam Scott, while getting to act alongside a cast that includes Westfeldt, Jon Hamm, Kristen Wiig and Maya Rudolph.
We got a chance to chat with Fox about the experience recently, as well as her thoughts on doing more of this kind of comedy in the future. Read on for that, but first, she reeled off her five favorite films.

So read on for all things Transformers, and look out for our extensive chat about G.I. Joe coming up in a couple of weeks.

Rush Hour 3 Takes '07 DVD Rental Crown
It may not have been quite the box-office phenomenon that its predecessors were -- and critics may have disliked it enough to keep it down at 20 percent on the Tomatometer -- but that didn't stop Rush Hour 3 from emerging as the top DVD rental of 2007.

Bay Prepares to Fake Out Transformers Fanboys
Michael Bay went through the wringer with the fanboys on Transformers. He addressed every concern -- early designs, scripts, remaining faithful to the source material -- and delivered a movie that won over most audiences, grossing nearly $320 million in America alone. But with Transformers 2 in development, Bay isn't taking any more lip service.

LaBeouf to Be Disturbia Director's Last Man?
Only a few short years ago, Shia LaBeouf was just another Disney Channel tween actor hoping to make the leap from a family sitcom to the big screen. These days, he's leading a master class in how to build a grown-up career, as evidenced by star turns in Disturbia and Transformers and his upcoming performance in Indiana Jones IV. Now, MTV Movies is reporting he could go from boy to man to the man.

Michael Bay Rolling Out From Transformers 2?
Hollywood enfant terrible Michael Bay has had some choice words with the actors and producers he's worked with in the past, but this time's he publicly locking horns with his biggest foe yet: the major Hollywood studio. Paramount's and Dreamwork's decision to switch exclusively to HD DVD isn't just going to lose Blu-Ray users, but also possibly Bay himself.

Transformers To Return On Even Bigger Screens, With Even More Footage!
It's hard to dispute that there has never been and will never be a more perfectly Michael Bay project than one in which giant robots from outer space come to Earth and blow stuff up. In fact, the only way Transformers could have been more quintessentially Bay is if it had been on even bigger screens. Like, oh, we don't know, maybe IMAX screens.

Patriotic "Transformers" Breeding Love for the Armed Forces?
Fans expect a lot from the "Transformers" movie but one thing that might not be on their list is patriotism. Yeah, they handled all the robots and characters and voices and visual effects. But it's actually a movie where the military are the heroes. Granted, our boys' weapons don't make much of a dent in the Decepticons, but at least they try.

Critical Consensus: "Transformers" About As Much As Meets The Eye
"Transformers" comes out tomorrow with some major chips on its shoulders. The movie has to please both the hardcore and fair-weather fans, along the nostalgia-impervious moviegoers expecting only summer entertainment. What do the critics, probably among the last on director Michael Bay's list of concerns, have to say?
July 2, 2007
"Transformers" Hunks Distracted by Explosions
Dialogue is not usually what people remember about Michael Bay movies, but consider how vital it is that the characters say the right lines to explain all the fantastic action going on around them. It's hard for actors playing soldiers to remember how to describe the battle with giant robots when real bombs are going off around them.

Writer Promises Fun "Transformers" Script
The trailers show giant robots tearing through cities and turning into vehicles, so we know they got that right. But they only give a hint at the humor in "Transformers." It's not just one liners. The film puts Autobots into fish out of water situation to derive comedy. Balancing that without losing the kick-ass fun was the screenwriters' job.

Non-Fan Bay Was Schooled In "Transformers" Nostalgia
Michael Bay kind of resented the "Transformers" toys at first. They made him go to Transformers School at Hasbro before he took on the project. Going through that experience actually made more of a "Transformers" fan out of him.

Bay Gives "Transformers" Robots Graceful, Kung-Fu Moves
You think of big robots invading cities and it's hard to imagine any nuance to it. "Sky Captain" had stiff, hulking hunks of metal marching in formation. One of Michael Bay's mandates for "Transformers" was that in robot form, they had to be graceful.

When Bernie Mac told Rotten Tomatoes that he plays a used car salesman who sells the "Transformers" in the upcoming live-action movie, it may have worried many fans. Transformers: The Title?
The guy who plays heroic Secret Service agent Aaron Pierce on "24" (Glenn Morshower) dropped a few inadvertant hints recently: Seems he's headed to "New Mexico" to shoot a movie for "Spielberg & Bay" called "Prime Directive." Hmmmm.

Michael Bay Buys His Very Own FX Company
Michael Bay already owns his own production company (Platinum Dunes), so obviously he has to own his own FX house! This explains why the "Transformers" director and a partner dropped what must have been a LOT of cash to purchase well-regarded FX company Digital Domain.

The giant robots are, of course, the stars of the "Transformers" universe, but there certainly doesn't seem to be a shortage of flesh & blood actors signing on for the massive production. Based on the extremely popular cartoon and toy characters of the 1980's, this big-screen "Transformers" adaptation is presently scheduled to begin shooting in the fall, and the studios have pegged November '06 for its release.

Tom Cruise and Steven Spielberg took some time off from their busy "War of the Worlds" shoot in Los Angeles to speak with the press about their forthcoming movie. In the interview, Speilberg revealed that wanted to make this movie 12 years ago, but lost interest when "Independence Day," as well as other "scavenger films ... that sort of picked the bones of H.G. Wells," came out.
