Hasbro Chief Discusses "G.I. Joe," "Magic: The Gathering" Movies
by Scott Weinberg | June 29, 2007
Discuss Article
While attending the "Transformers" premiere, IESB.net was able to snag a few minutes with Hasbro's Brian Goldner, and the guy had some pretty interesting things to say about "Transformers," "G.I. Joe," and ... "Magic: The Gathering"??

Mr. Goldner acknowledges the early (and very negative) script review on "G.I. Joe," but promises that the flick will focus on the origin story between Joe, Cobra, and all the other crazy soldier dudes. He then (politely) avoided a question about any "Transformers" sequels before dropping a mild hint about a movie version of "Magic: The Gathering."

But the video interview is mainly about "G.I. Joe," so definitely check that out right here.

Oh by the way, that "Transformers" flick opens next week. I haven't really seen much advertising for that one. Have you?

Both movies sound TERRIBLE
These both sound like terrible subjects to base a movie on, despite a fanbase. Remember Dungeons and Dragons? I've had my fill of bad fantasy movies. And GI Joes? Despite some nostalgia people may have I don't see much coming out of it. I don't like serious (non-comedic) army movies myself. Would people that like real war movies be interested, probably not.

I was hoping for a G.I. Joe movie with a modern appeal... something with Destro supplying guns to Jihadists while Cobra Commander uses them as pawns in order to plunge Europe and the United States into war and blame it on the Joes or something. An origin story would be... kinda dull.

As for M:tG, as long as they stay away from the spellcasting and keep to a fantastic expedition of heroes sort of thing, it MIGHT be ok.

Go Joe!
As a long-time fan of G.I. Joe (jeez has it really been 25 years?!), I am both thrilled and worried to hear about the upcoming movie. If done properly (and that's a BIG if), the flick could be awesome. The origins of Joe and Cobra shoud be done by people who know and appreciate the source material. So long as there is no Cobra-La and they don't make Firefly a ninja, count me in. 'Nuff said!

just have the whole thing be about Snake eyes killing everything but in a good way.
But really if it's an action movie it will probalby turn out kind of dumb...I think they would have to go a little closer to something like Mission Impossilbe or Sneakers, more of an elite espionage team as opposed to a big army of Joes running around blasting at an army of Corbra's...althought the B.A.T.S should be in it because I like them and that's the only reason the studios should need!

I've wanted a live-action GI-Joe movie since I was a kid so I'm glad to hear that this will be Joe vs. Cobra, unlike what I've been hearing lately. I think GI Joe has just as much potential as Transformers. I hope they stay true to the comic books like Goldner says they are and not screw this up.

So many instant haters are willing to wipe their butts with the idea of a G.I. Joe movie and flush it down the toilet, but I say to them that they are all shallow-minded people! G.I. Joe would not have lasted for as long as it has if it wasn't for the incredible story and action potential that the world of G.I. Joe vs. Cobra has shown for three decades.

And it isn't just for kids! TMNT is for little kids. You will find a lot more teenagers and young adults, even a few thirtysomethings (like me) immensely interested in G.I. Joe. It's not a kids storyline.

I'm thrilled at the idea of a live-action G.I. Joe movie, as long as they take it seriously, like they have with Transformers. Who knows? It could end up being just as powerful as Transformers, which so many thought would be crap in the early days.

To all you haters, don't give me those stupid "Oh joy" remarks because honestly, we know nothing about these movies yet, and have no right to pass judgement. Really, do you think you're being fair?

Yo Joe!

Yeah, careful there, Bats. You're a little too young to be getting cynical. Cynacism is a slippery slope. First, it's "oh joy" and before you know if, you're going "HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA, I own you you are never allowed to talk again."

And we all know you don't want that to happen to you ;-)

I wasn't picking on Bats in particular about Oh Joy. I've seen it lots of times. But Ashron's right! Careful, or senility is just around the corner!

A Magic the Gathering Movie would be awful. I read one of the books, that was horrible. I just don't see how this could be done without resorting to little or no connection to the game.

I don't mind negative reviews of Transformers, honest. They're a bit refreshing. But there is something you need to remember:

Your opinion comes from a small minority. Very few people agree with you so far.

Maybe the movie is powerful? In a way you didn't see?

A Magic: The Gathering movie would be interesting. The problem that arises though is where to start. There is quite a bit of storyline from the books that were created along with the game. Not only that but there are many many many different stories within the overbearing storyline.

A Magic geek should face off against Yu-Gi-Oh with their cards, featuring so much overacting that there'd have to be a new category for the Oscars. Triumph should provide in-game commentary. Laugh riot of the century. That I'd pay to see.

I do not know how many of you guys have read the magic the gathering novels. However for the most part they are pretty entertaining, with the exception of the lorwyn block forward, and I could see some good movies coming out of them as long as they did them like they wrote the books. Also another huge part of the success of the movie/movies would have to be....don't make the movie like they did with dragonball...talk about butchering something good...that's another story. I think as long as they would stick with the novels and not make there own story up with it, it would have potential. As far as GI Joe, i recently saw the trailer for the movie, it looked pretty good. hopefully it's not one of those show the best parts in the previews kind of movie. and for the transformers sucks guy....that was a pretty good movie.
