Yes, Apparently the World Does Need a "Voltron" Movie
by Scott Weinberg | July 27, 2005
Discuss Article
Not long after "The Transformers" became a bona-fide toy sensation back in the '80s, along came a rather similar toy line called "Voltron." And only a few short weeks after the news of a "Transformers" movie was announced, The Hollywood Reporter indicates that a "Voltron" movie is also getting underway. (What a coincidence!)

Anyway, producer Mark Gordon is the one seeing green on this project, which will focus on "five maverick explorer-pilots who must travel to the planet Arus to learn how to operate Voltron, a giant mechanical warrior formed by five smaller robots."

No word yet on when a live-action "Go-Bots" movie will kick into production.

At least they picked the better Voltron. The one with the 15 land/air/sea vehicles would be a logistical nightmare and not allow much room to flesh out any character. The lions actually had villains with depth and a world going on aside from the princess and all that crap.

And then what?
Silverhawks? What about those furry creatures that wrapped into balls (like soccer balls and baseballs).... Shirttails? Gobots (only good if Scooter gets toasted).

live action?
Are we sure this one's live-action? I read this on Yahoo and it never mentioned whether or not it was.

star blazers
In any case, I'm still patiently waiting for the live action rendition of Star Blazers. I heard Disney dropped the ball on this one 5-6 years ago. They purchased the rights to the screenplay but it never really got off the ground after that.

Here's hoping this helps resurrect the project!

Please God, no!!
Star Blazers would almost inevitably be defiled. I'm not naive enough to believe that certain things are sacred, but I hope that when (yes, when) Star Blazers is remade as a live action film, that it either is done well, or is not seen by anyone (a la Fantastic Four, the 90's version).

How about the Gobots? Aim low for a change. They can only improve on it, no?

Now we only need a Megas XLR movie and the holy trinity of awesome giant robots will be complete.

How about Furby?
Where's Furby: The Movie? OR better yet, the live-action version of Teddy Ruxpin!

Seriously, though. I'd be thrilled to see a live action Thundercats and a live action Starblazers.

I'd also like to see a live-action treatment of the Bionic Six, but I've never run across anybody else that seems to remember that one. Ah well...

Star Blazers was just one of those magical anime series that may never again be matched. It preceded the epic Robotech/Macross sagas, and depending on who you talk to, were superior than those. Certainly, the Robotech/Macross phenomenon owes much of its success to Star Blazers.

That being said, a 2-hour movie would be a logistical nightmare, considering the timeline of the show itself was 2 months or so. Squeezing that into 2 hours would suck out a lot of the storylines and charming nuances of the show. We would inevitably be getting a bastardized version of the original series.

*sigh* It's better than nothing, though.

Say YES GOD YES to animation.
Phuq live-action. Why do all of these revival movies have to be live-action??? All the "amazing" parts of them will be animated anyway!

High Hopes, Low Expectations.
I loved Voltron(Lions, don't recall anything else.) so I hope if they do end up doing this, and not leaving it in treatment limbo, it is done right. But I have a strange feeling this will look just like "Thunderbirds".

Voltron and the Transformers
The fact that Voltron is a 1981 anime that was also released in the U.S. before
Transformers shows you how much Scott Weinberg knows about the subject. On the other hand, Transformers has a little more to work with in the story catagory. Voltron on DVD is all I really care to see.

I've read the movie script first hand and I must say that it's better than I expected but not as good as I had hoped.

The current reviews on LatinoReview.com and Chud.com really don't do a good job and explaining the film. Most of their reviews are just hype that leaves the reader wondering what the heck is going on.

I've posted a full review (almost 15 pages in MS Word) on my website that explains the story and characters, using direct quotes from the script itself. The address for the review is http://www.geocities.com/kiethblacklion/Scriptreview.html

The review is full of spoilers so unlessyou want to know what's going on, don't read it.
