This silly action comedy mixes brilliant production design -- it looks like a Norman Rockwell painting come to life -- and cloying sentimentality to no good effect.

Bill Firpo (Nicholas Cage) is trying to stay straight, but at the behest of his brothers Dave, played by John Lovitz, and Alvin (Dana Carvey), he agrees to help out on a bank robbery which they assure him cannot go wrong. Dave and Alvin have recently gotten out of jail, and the poorly guarded bank in the small town of Paradise, Pennsylvania, provides an opportunity for easy money they just can't pass up. The robbery proves successful, but they don't manage to beat the huge snowstorm out of town; snowed in with their loot, they are taken in by the unwitting townspeople they've just robbed, who give new meaning to the phrase "killing with kindness!" Reviews for Trapped in Paradise
Harmless and totally familiar, it's better than static and informercials, but that's about the sum of it.
The question is, can a trio of amiable goofballs take you through a movie that's, well, not so great?
Considering that there isn't a single laugh in the whole picture, the term 'comedy' must be used loosely.
In no circumstances, even under threat of torture, admit to anyone that you were suckered into seeing this, one of the worst movies of the year.
It's a minor holiday miracle that this homey comedy barely elicits even a chuckle.
It should be preserved by the Library of Congress, as an example of creative desperation. It plays like a documentary about a group of actors forced to perform in a screenplay that contains not one single laugh, or moment of wit, or flash of intelligence.
Has enough in the way of sentiment and goofy situational predicaments to put it over as a serviceable family holiday attraction.
Cage looks cold most of the time, and has retractable stubble. The rest of the cast look like they're waiting for summer.
