Trial by Media (An American Daughter) (2000)
Christine Lahti received a Golden Globe nomination for her performance in this made-for-TV drama about a woman who must decide how much of her dignity and integrity she's willing to give up for the sake of her career. Lyssa Grant Hughes (Lahti) is a well-known physician and noted women's rights activist who has chosen to enter the political arena. Hughes' name is being bandied about as a possible nominee for Surgeon General, and the news media begins researching in-depth stories about her life and career. While talking to a member of Hughes' family, a reporter discovers a bit of embarrassing information -- she once forgot to mail back a jury duty form and subsequently found herself in a bit of legal hot water -- and this news, coupled with a faux pas by Hughes during a speech, is turned into a political controversy. Hughes' father (Stanley Anderson), a respected career politician, comes to his daughter's aid and offers her advice, but Lyssa soon wonders if responding to the tempest-in-a-teapot "scandal" isn't just playing up to a system that she does not respect and would prefer to avoid.
