Tron Sequel Gets Its Director
You certainly are persistent, Tron.

Break out your glowing Frisbees, everyone -- the Tron sequel has a director!

Well, almost. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Joseph Kosinski -- who will be directing the Logan's Run remake, and is best known for the award-winning commercials he's directed for Nike, Apple, and Nintendo -- is "in final negotiations to develop and direct" the new Tron. Steven Lisberger, who wrote and directed the 1982 original, will be one of the sequel's producers.

Storyline details are being kept under wraps for now, but Disney is referring to the new installment -- apparently also titled Tron -- as "the next chapter" in the original's story. According to the report, Lost writers Eddie Kitsis and Adam Horowitz are at work on the script.

That all sounds fine. But here's the news Tron fans are looking for:

When making the original, in order to convince the studio to take a chance on a first-time director, Lisberger shot a test reel, financed by the studio, involving the deadly Frisbee battle. In a case of historical synchronicity, sources said one of the things Kosinski will be doing is working on a sequence involving the movie's Light Cycles to work out his vision for the movie.

Odds are high that this will all be sort of lame, but as long as Light Cycles are involved, we'll be there.

Oh. My. User! If Jeff Bridges is brought back as the chairman of Encom, I'm so stoked. But more than likely, this'll be shut down like the last time 2.0 was "almost" made a few years ago. :(

I wonder why Lisberger didn't want a second crack at the helm.

The only I remember about "Tron," is that watching it in the theatre gave me a tremendous headache (that and the incredibly stupid plot).

Sign me up. I thought the original film was breathtakingly original and exciting. Deserving of a follow up in the crazy cyber universe.

The original was completely stupid but thoroughly entertaining. If this sequel makes it to theaters, I'm there!

True, but before they start using new technology a very important piece of old technolgy is required first; a good writer.

I just Netflixed Tron a few months ago and was reminded of what a kick-***, original movie it was! It's amazing to realize how much this must have influenced the Wachowski Bros. for their script/concept for the Matrix. I actually think this sequel has a LOT of potential to be a good movie.

Question: would the matrix have happened if Tron was created?

Stevegilpin,
You're right, of course, but to say that the Wachowski brothers were merely 'influenced' by Tron's wholly original use of an alternate cyber-universe is understated at the least. As far as a Tron sequel is concerned, I'd rather risk my money on that than another Matrix film any day.

Did anyone WATCH Tron? Like, not as the special effects dynamo it was back in the day, but as an actual film? Because, as much as I hate to admit it, this is a sequel I'm very much NOT looking forward to. Computers and our interaction with them have changed, not to mention out willingness to submit to a hokey set of cheap effects made by some kid on an iMac. Count me out on this one, Jeff Bridges or no.

Ender,
I have to wholeheartedly disagree with your claim that peoples, "willingness to submit to a hokey set of cheap effects made by some kid on an iMac" has changed. How else would you explain the success of films like the Matrix and the Lord of the Rings trilogies?

Point taken regarding The Matrix. But in the case of Lord of the Rings, I have to add that as many costumes and makeup and props that could feasibly be made were indeed made without computer assistance, and that only when it was absolutely necessary was computer animation used.
The public is not the same as it was 25 years ago. All I'm saying is that some films should remain untouched as a symbol of their place in time, a staple for their generation. I don't believe Tron will translate that well to younger viewers who are used to faster-paced science fiction.

Ender,
I'm certain you didn't take it this way, but just to clarify, I'm definitely not questioning your opinion on the validity of using CGI when necessary(or otherwise). That said, I still think that the effects laden nature of those films or any other CGI driven movie is the most likely reason they do as well as they do.
And as I mentioned before, my preference for a Tron 'sequel'(if that's what is) over every other 'hokey' remake/sequel, is based on the potential that it can't be much worse than what's out now. Sad to say, but that's the best we can hope for lately.

Again, good point point G.M. I suppose it's all we can do to hope, and so, why not? Perhaps this sequel will restore a bit of my faith in Hollywood reboots.

Tron was an awesome original movie. If they can make a sequel and retain the lighting and feel of the original, then I'm all for it. The virtual reality has to stay geometric and neon like the original or it's not going to be the same and lose a lot of the fans of the original. Granted computers and our perception of virtual reality is much different now than it was back then, but the VR that was portrayed back then IS Tron. If it's a more realistic and more Matrix-like virtual reality, then please just stop the project now.

END OF LINE.

Tron Sequel....ha..ha...ha hahahaahahahhaha.....

Computer Animation was a unique commodity in the days when it was first released....I predict straight to DVD with the sequel (at least 35% Rotten).

Hollywood is really sucking grapes at the minute. Not one single original film that dosent involve a remake or sequel or computer game.

Why remake/reimagine when there are thousands of stories in books? Lazy *** producers/directors!
