Jeff Bridges Ready and Willing to Do Tron 2
Also: The perils of the dance belt.
by Fred Topel | December 12, 2007
Blog Article | Discuss Article
Rumors of a Tron sequel have been teasing fans of the early '80s classic for years. Tron 2.0 was one version, but that ended up becoming a videogame. Now Flynn himself, Jeff Bridges, has confirmed that he is ready to entertain an offer, which he expects to come by his office soon.

"I heard they're going to pitch me one pretty soon," said Bridges. "I hear they're going to make a sequel. I'm always curious to hear what they're going to say. I haven't heard [the idea yet]."

Nearly 30 years later, a new Tron would have to find the cutting edge of 21st-century technology, since the original was outdated shortly after its release. "The reasons to do it, and the reason I did that one, was because it was so innovative -- and I understand they've got a whole new batch of stuff like that that, innovations that they want to use on that, so that could be kind of fun."

The older and wiser Bridges is prepared to suffer for a Tron sequel, as many of the visual affects apparatuses have not changed much. "Wearing a dance belt...I know you ladies wear thongs, and a dance belt is kind of like our version of the thong and it's a terrible thing, man. You can't sit down. Then I've got tights."

What's with all the old film series getting new movies? Indy 4, Rambo 4, Metropolis remake, and now this.

In case it hasn't been made abundantly clear from this and two dozen other websites,

THERE ARE EXACTLY *NO* NEW OR ORIGINAL IDEAS IN HOLLYWOOD.

Having said that, there's very little reason not to do something, if you have passion and a fresh vision to bring to it. The reason why so many of these 'reboots' and 're-imaginings' such rhino testicles is because they're done to cash in, not to explore.
Example of GOOD: James Cameron doing sequels to Alien and Terminator, arguably two of the best science fiction movies ever made. Also, it can be said that Lord of the Rings counts as a re-imagining, because it, too, was done before (though animated). And, of course, in the 're-imagining' department, Batman Begins and James Bond.
Example of Bad: Just about every other f#cking movie that has been made in the last ten to fifteen years (with obvious exceptions).

If they re-do Tron because they have a Wachowski-like jones to go balls-crazy on this, then go for it. If they're doing it because they've simply gotten to that part of the 'remake' list, then this would, and should suck and their failure should know no bounds.

And thanks, RT, for editing my content. I never typed 'such' rhino testicles and you know it.

I've been wanting a new TRON movie for many years now. I love the original and I'd love to see a sequel, but I'm very adamant in my opinion that they need to keep the old look and feel of the digital world as portrayed by the first movie (with maybe some minor enhancements). There's no way that they'll make it better by trying to modernize it. They'll just ruin it instead.

Having Bridges playing Flynn again as an old-school hacker that maybe has fallen from his achieved success obtained at the end of the first movie would be cool. Having Master Control reincarnated would also be interesting also.

I completely agree that if this movie is made, it shouldn't be another remake, it should be a legit, well-conceived, well-supported, sequel. Don't half-*** this one to rake in the money due to its association to the original movie. I don't agree that this movie should turn into a Wachowski bros. full throttle Matrix-like movie. That would be bad. Not because the Matrix is bad (it's awesome), but that's not TRON.

Or I should've said that Matrix like action isn't what made TRON awesome and wouldn't fit well when making a sequel.

I loved the movie...I don't think its something you can really mess up. I also think it gives some young actor a chance to make a name for themselves without burying themselves in some esoteric film that no one gets just to get screen time.

Elixor has a point in that modernizing Tron wouldn't make it the same movie. I love Tron. I'd even be down with a sequel if they did it right. But modern videogame graphics are getting so close to movie graphics, that a similar kind of story where a programmer falls into the video-game would come off as just another animated movie. Similarly, the outdated graphics of Tron would be completely out of place in a modern film. I don't know if there's a winning combination. So perhaps it's better to leave well enough alone.

With the games we have today, I wouldn't mind seeing Bridges being sucked into a game of say... Manhunt?

ok lawdog, i know you're old and disenchanted with life and everything, but your comment is just ignorant. no new ideas? riiiight. just because the suits feel pre-existing properties are an easier sell to audiences, doesn't mean no one's creating new work. check out that black list of top unproduced scripts for some hard evidence.

Oh but wait, i totally forgot that you were actually a part of the hollywood system, so you would really know what you were talking about. you do work in hollywood right? jackass.

People ARE creating great new work, the studios just aren't buying it. It's that simple.

I hate remakes and lazy sequels. I HATE them like most other people on RT. However, Tron is ripe for a revisioning, if done right. I say go for it, and if Bridges is involved then even better.

If this were a done deal I'd pre-order my theater ticket and DVD right now. I say modernize the hell out it. I want multi-core cities, and L1 and L2 cache land. And instead of Master Control digital space could be a universe of millions of computer worlds to address the internet. Yeah.

If this happens it better not be something like Flynn's son tinkers with his father's computer, gets sucked in, and dad's got to rescue him while answering for his short comings as a parent. No "dad you never listen to me" crap. It needs to be the Jeff Bridges show. I bet it will be something like Flynn's down and out because he is obsolete ( an 8-bit dude in a 64-bit world), but a virus from the past threatens everything and Tron is the hope...but he's lost, so Flynn has to find Tron and convince him that he can still make a difference.

The reason I think the old style environment would work is that the virtual world itself doesn't have to be modern-style visually. Granted if people were still interfacing this world through video games today, they'd look much different to the users, but the underlying world doesn't have to reflect this. Saying it another way, how someone visualizes this virtual world while being part of it doesn't have to be similar to how someone sees it playing the interfacing video game. You could defend this technically if you really wanted to, but that shouldn't be needed. A complex video game model with all of its textures, animation, and lighting could look like a simple wire frame or even just a cube (granted we'd want something a little more interesting), when viewed in the virtual world. This would be much like how a bit was viewed as a shifting floating shape in the original TRON, but the other direction in this movie.

The point being, it can make sense to keep the virtual world consistent with the original movie when making the sequel.

Ooo, or what if (the following is just speculation):

The guy who wrote the tron program dies. Flynn comforts the widow (awkward). Meanwhile a virus from the past threatens everything by taking control of all the computer controlled weapons of the world (like War-Games). Flynn realizes that only Tron can save the world so he dives into computer land to find him. Flynn finds Tron who resembles his dead friend (so there is a weird after-life vibe). Flynn tries to make peace with his dead friend through Tron for sleeping / loving the widow. Tron doesn't understand but forgives him anyway. Together they defeat the virus and save the world.

I suppose they could throw a son character into the mix so Flynn could explain death and how you live forever in the memory of those left behind - and in cyber space. You could totally milk a bunch of Disney moments out of that....yeah I'd this film. Would you?

mr.bowler, to try and answer your statement.......i feel as though the studios know when they have tired out a series by coming out with 3 or so in a short period of 6 or so years.......but you have people like me who would not mind seeing a new movie be made in the series, so many years later just b/c it would be 'fresh' in a sense.....i think if they would have made a rambo 4 in 91 or 92 it would have done horrible and nobody would have cared to see it..........but since so many years have gone by i think rekindling the series sparks peoples interest.....it got me, same as terminator 3, Indy 4, rocky 6...etc..........

This could be a lot of fun if done well. Bring Bruce Boxleitner as an aged old program struggling in a world where he's obsolete. I think an updated look of the old Tron universe could look great.
