First Shot of Robert Downey Jr. in Tropic Thunder Hits the Web
And what a shot it is.

The first photos from Ben Stiller's Tropic Thunder and Kevin Smith's Zack and Miri Make a Porno surfaced online this week, and though the Zack and Miri still is basically just your garden-variety shot of the stars in action, the Thunder shot had film nerds across the Web spitting their Yoo-Hoos all over their computer screens.

As illustrated by the helpful zoom in the lower left-hand corner, the actor you're meant to focus on here is the fellow in the middle. If he doesn't immediately look familiar to you, allow us to jog your memory: You loved him in such films as The Pick-Up Artist, Less Than Zero, and Heart & Souls.

Give up? Yeah, that's Robert Downey Jr. Let's have Entertainment Weekly break it down for us:

[Downey] plays Kirk Lazarus, a very serious Oscar-winning actor cast in the most expensive Vietnam War film ever. Problem is, Lazarus's character, Sgt. Osiris, was originally written as black. So Lazarus decides to dye his skin and play Osiris, um, authentically. Funny? Sure. Dangerous? That's an understatement. ''If it's done right, it could be the type of role you called Peter Sellers to do 35 years ago,'' Downey says. ''If you don't do it right, we're going to hell.''

Tropic Thunder debuts August 15, but we'll only have to wait until March 17 to see the trailer -- which, according to EW, features Downey trying "to bond with a real African-American castmate by quoting the theme song from 'The Jeffersons.'"

Good for Mr. Downey Jr that he is ONLY *playing a role* of a Black Man.

He should be forced to live under that "makeup" for 30 days !

"Officer wait wait, Officer please wait! I'm actually wh...wha..wait!"

POOOWWWWWWW!

N!gger you are DEAD!

I had lost faith in Ben Stiller, but this movie looks like it may well be awesome... fingers crossed!

Wath.....all of the f#cking conservative and church groups are going to boycott this flick. The NAACP is going to yell racism and Jesse Jackson is going to fly to HollyWood and negotiate a million man march. They will not get the joke at all.

I applaud Stiller and Downey for having some heavy balls in this day and age.

It is not the fact that Downey is playing a Black person, it is the fact that DOWNEY is playing a Black person!

A former crack/coke-head playing a Black dude ?

Oh how fitting! :P

Whats up with Mr. Jr lately though ? Now he is Iron Man too ? wtf ? lol

So,this might sound like a stupid question, but is that ACTUALLY Downey in makeup, or a black actor that looks like Downey and they just dub RBJ's voice over?

He's taken the Johnny Depp path and realized you don't have to just be in small weird Indie films to be brilliant. Funny how laying off the crack makes you smarter like that.

I think it's because he's playing a character who takes a role in the movie within the movie that was written for a black man. The joke is that the character is this serious actor so dedicated to his craft that he attempts to play the role for authenticity. In which case, you obviously can't have Don Cheadle for this role. That's my reading of it so far anyway. Have to check the trailer out after work. I hear it's age sensitive and, at this juncture, I'm at school surrounded by kids.
