'Ham-handed' is an a truly stunning way of dismissing the attention to detail and restraint that characterize the handling of this uncomfortable subject matter. The elements you found distracting were obviously there to indicate the separate immersion of each character in their own experience and version of the truth. It is disheartening that reviews of work are often more concerned with their own pithiness and cogent jibes than they are at fair assessments. Any work is comprised of decisions and choices, many of which the reviewer may not have made, but that does not invalidate the choice. It should be judged on merit, not on fulfillment of expectation.
