Though very tame by contemporary standards, Tunnel of Love was considered the last word in racy comedy back in 1958. Adapted from the Broadway hit by Peter DeVries and Joseph Fields, the film stars Doris Day and Richard Widmark as suburbanites Isolde and Augie Poole. Isolde and Augie desperately want a child, but for diverse reasons have never been able to conceive. They decide to adopt a child, prompting a visit to the Poole home by pretty adoption-agency officer Estelle Novick (Gia Scala).

Full of missteps as the cast tries its darnedest to get around a limp screenplay and its unlikable characters.
Kelly does little to open up the play, so the movie remains rather talky and stage-bound most of the time. (TCM Spotlight: Doris Day Collection)
...harmless and inconsequential, never outright funny but occasionally amusing in a low-key manner.
The actors are game, but the film was flat and not a bit funny.
This movie is pretty hilarious for the most part, but it's sometimes kind of annoying and silly too. Overall it's a pretty good romantic comedy, it's fun.
