The Hard Candy and 30 Days of Night filmmaker lands coveted sequel.

Summit Entertainment announced today that they have found their director for the third Twilight film, The Twilight Saga: Eclipse, based on the third book in author Stephenie Meyer's best-selling novel series. Taking on the dark thriller story at the heart of Eclipse will be director David Slade, best known for his gritty and atmospheric work in films Hard Candy and the comic book adaptation 30 Days of Night. Twilight: Eclipse is already slated for release on Wednesday, June 30, 2010.

From Summit Entertainment's press release:

Meyer stated, "I am thrilled that David Slade will be directing ECLIPSE. He's a visionary filmmaker who has so much to offer this franchise. From the beginning, we've been blessed with wonderful directorial talent for the Twilight Saga, and I'm so happy that ECLIPSE will be carrying on with that tradition."

Feig said, "Stephenie Meyer's ECLIPSE is a muscular, rich, vivid book and we at Summit looked long and hard for a director who could do it justice.  We believe we have found that talent in David Slade, a director who has been able to create complex, visually arresting worlds.  We cannot wait to see the ECLIPSE he brings to life and brings to the fans eagerly awaiting its arrival in summer of 2010."

Filmmaker Slade came to prominence as a director for his work on 2006's engrossing film HARD CANDY starring Academy AwardŽ Nominated actress Ellen Page as well as directing 2007's genre hit 30 DAYS OF NIGHT which opened to number one at the box office its first weekend of release.

In ECLIPSE, Bella once again finds herself surrounded by danger as Seattle is ravaged by a string of mysterious killings and a malicious vampire continues her quest for revenge.  In the midst of it all, she is forced to choose between her love for Edward and her friendship with Jacob - knowing that her decision has the potential to ignite the ageless struggle between vampire and werewolf.  With her graduation quickly approaching, Bella is confronted with the most important decision of her life.

Meanwhile, the first Twilight sequel, The Twilight Saga: New Moon (based on the second book in the series) is currently filming and set for release November 20, 2009.

Why do they keep talking about the 3rd and 4th movies? The 2nd one isn't even out yet. Its almost as ridiculous as Dragonball:Evolution and its seven sequels.

This makes perfect sense since his last vampire movie 30 Days of Night turned out so well! (sarcasm). This is really disappointing, I like Hard Candy a lot, and even 30 Days of Night at least showed he had an eye for good visuals. I'd like see his talent be put to better use then this. Also I found it funny that he stopped his twitter account today, I wonder why?

Hopefully Slade will try to bring more tension to this film. The 3rd Twilight film has a lot of potential to have some scares and tension seeing as how there are actually vampires killing tons people, there is also the potential for a decent battle at the end of the movie.

Jokerboy are you ready for round two of our previous argument? This is another Twilight post after all.

Ahaha I support the site and even its Twilight articles, by throwing in my two cents. Plus of course I'm going to comment on disappointing news like this, I mean its David Slade.

I think it would have been much more disappointing if Juan Antonio Bayona had ended up directing this as was initially reported. That would have been a head scratcher. Slade has done 30 Days of Night so clearly he has shown that he isn't necessarily above garbage.

"OK, who wants to direct Breaking Dawn?"
*crickets*
"C'mon, guys, it's finale. Someone's gotta want a piece of that."
*dog barks in distance*
Guys...guys...?

I liked both Hard Candy, and 30 Days Of Night. This seems like a major waste of talent for David Slade.

Eclipse was easily my favorite of the series and think it'll make the best movie. Gotta move fast on these. It's not like you can do a teen vampire series like you'd do Harry Potter where watching them age is half the fun. If Robert Pattinson is 30 and still doing this it'll look completely ridiculous. Think that's half the reason Angel was canx'd because it was getting so obvious Boreanaz and Marsters were aging.

Truth, bigbrother. And, it was getting hard to suspend your disbelief... but it was a shame to see it go. Angel was an awesome show!

I also think you have to strike while the iron is hot. There is no doubt that this franchise is much more of a fad than Harry Potter, mostly because of the fact that it more neatly fits into the genre of "Youth Fiction" than does Harry Potter, where by the end it was mostly an adult book, with much better writing and more sophisticated storytelling.

As far as Slade being "above" this movie, I loved 30 Days Of Night, and having read Eclipse, he seems like a perfect choice as **SPOILER** their is a clan of about 20 Vampires terrorizing Seattle in this movie.** END SPOILER ** Besides, he is getting a fat paycheck to direct something like this. I would do it if I were him.

Because there rushing these films out, so one director wouldn't have time to do two movies. Its money over quality on this series.

You've probably seen already, but Joss Whedon did a series of comics called Angel: After the Fall which is a follow on to after the TV series ended. I was pleasantly surprised to see it when I returned from oversea's. Basically picks up right after where the series ended. Love Bones too...still a bit unsure about Dollhouse.

I just saw one of his movies...30 days of night. I thought it sucked. Sure why not, this movie is already trashed by the cast, might as well pick-up the big hammer and nail the coffin shut with a **** director. I didn't even like Eclipse, the love story got dull and the characters mundane. I'm sure the movie will make 4 billion based on title alone. What a rediciulous situation.
