First Images from Twilight: New Moon Released

Details on the scenes we see in the first official images from the Twilight sequel.

As filming in Italy draws to a close on The Twilight Saga: New Moon, Summit Entertainment has released a batch of new images for your first look at scenes from the vampire romance sequel to 2008's smash hit, Twilight. Find high resolution versions of the three new images inside which depict helmer Chris Weitz directing the pivotal birthday party scene, Bella's (Kristen Stewart) meadow encounter with the bad guy bloodsucker Laurent (Edi Gathegi), and -- brace yourselves, Twilighters -- a kissing scene between Bella and Edward (Robert Pattinson)!

In The Twilight Saga: New Moon (in theaters November 20, 2009), returning heroine Bella (Kristen Stewart) is left heartbroken when her vampire beau, Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson) leaves the town of Forks, where she is left to deal with a few familiar villains and a burgeoning friendship with the Quileute teen, Jacob Black (Taylor Lautner).

As new director Chris Weitz (American Pie, About a Boy, The Golden Compass) wraps up filming in Montepulciano, Italy, we've got your first look at the first three stills from the sequel. (Check them out before Googling the shirtless kissing spy photos that hit the internet today!)

[SPOILER ALERT - scene descriptions contain plot spoilers]

The first new photo is a behind-the-scenes shot of what appears to be the birthday party scene that opens Stephenie Meyer's novel sequel, New Moon. The party, thrown by Alice (Ashley Greene) and the Cullen family in honor of Bella's 18th birthday, comes to an abrupt end when the accident-prone Bella injures herself, throwing the newly vegetarian vampire Jasper (Jackson Rathbone) into a frenzy. Bella, as we see here, ends up on the ground with shattered glass shards -- not the ideal situation in a room full of vampires. Click on image for larger version.

In addition to unveiling Bella's green party dress and the new Cullen home, this behind-the-scenes shot also reveals our first glimpse of director Weitz, who was brought on to replace original film helmer Catherine Hardwicke for the sequel. It's a strong image that conveys Weitz's authority over the set with subtlety.

In another newly released image we see Bella's fateful encounter with the returning vampire Laurent (Edi Gathegi), who we last saw as a foe-turned-friend when he warned the Cullen clan about James' tracking skills in Twilight. Though he might give the Cullen way of life a try, can Laurent ignore his lust for human blood -- especially when he stumbles across the solitary Bella in Edward's meadow?

Finally, we saved the best for last. It's hard to tell what place in the film this appears, since by the events of New Moon, Bella and Edward's relationship is well established and, well, they should be used to kissing. So let's take a closer look. They're outside; can this be the scene where Edward takes Bella for a walk and breaks her heart? His expression could be one of emotional pain, or it could be the pain of abstaining from Bella's sweet blood. What do you think?

I think Weitz will do a good job. If he makes them a lot of dough, I wonder if summit will offer him "Breaking Dawn." Too early to even speculate, probably. The movie could do horribly. I hope it does well though.

Har har, I say. Tis none of the above. His expression is merely a facsimile of the one he wore during the entirety of the first movie. It seems limited acting chops are now being mistaken for an emotionally nuanced performance. :-P

Did anyone like the first movie? When I watched it I couldn't stop laughing. Like how he would carry the girl around on his back, up trees and all across the country side. haha. The first movie looked terrible. It%u2019s movie franchise made for silly people, to put it nicely.

Yes, I liked the first movie. Didn't love it, but liked it and I assure you if I didn't I wouldn't get my jollies making fun of people who did. That's sillier than anything.

I didn't like the first movie - let's just say I'm definitely not in the targeted audience - but I'm not on the "worst movie of all time" bandwagon either. Twilight had a 30ish millions budget. That's pathetic, considering the genre and the hype surrounding the movie. Hopefully the people in charge won't be as cheap this time around and they'll let the filmmakers do their job. HP series got a lot better when Cuarón took over and decided to move away from blindly imitating the books. I hope Summit does the same with this series, because some of the lines and scenes were clearly taken straight from the book (which I haven't read) and it just didn't work on screen.

Bigbrother

Bigbrother on 05-27-2009 04:57 PM

They're definately spending more money on this one, but it's unclear at this time just how far he intends to deviate from the books. I would suggest if they're going to do a HP style deviation this would be the movie to do it with since IMO this was the weakest book in the series. Just a bit too much Bella pining over Edward for me. It'll be hard to translate that word for word from the book since much of it is just Bella moping about which even though Kristen is an attractive girl. I ain't paying 12 bucks to see for 2 hours.

Graeme A.

Graeme A. on 05-27-2009 10:10 PM

Just to be clear, I never actually said I hated the movie. Twasn't great, but it certainly wasn't the worst vampire flick I've seen. I was merely having a chuckle at the last sentence in the article.

I'll be honest though, I was a little miffed at why Edward continually approached Bella only to tell her to keep away from him. And I never thought a vampire would drive a Volvo. If you're immortal, you wanna be on a Harley or in some kind of sports car, not a nice safe family hatch.

Those were actually pretty much my only beefs with the movie.

badjoke71808

badjoke71808 on 05-27-2009 11:10 PM

I won't make fun of the movie, but i'll make fun of the source. I think it sad when a good book like Anansi Boys haven't been made to film and it a much better book. The already failing "Monster" Genre is lsoing some more steam with Movies like Twilight. If he a vampire and he steps out into sun light, he should die not Sparkle. I think they should be more like Let the Right One in, now that was an amzing Vampire Movie.

JettaJameson

JettaJameson on 05-27-2009 11:38 PM

That's retard logic. So, you'd prefer that every movie about vampires follow the exact same formula? Sunlight, garlic, crosses, bats, wooden stakes, coffins. Snooooooooore!!! I applaud Stephenie Meyer for reinventing vampire mythology. So she's not the best writer in the world. Who cares? They can't all be the best.

These are boring pictures. Show us something good and I'll get excited. The wolf pack, the Volturi, Volterra, SOMETHING we havent seen. All of these pics look like they could've come fom the first movie. This update is pretty pointless. We don't need an update everytime someone involved with the movie picks their nose.

GreenBastard on 05-27-2009 11:22 PM

I don't really think Twilight is a vampire movie. It's a love story. The vamps don't even have sharp teeth and they get shiny in light!

Sergio R.

Sergio R. on 05-28-2009 04:11 AM

Haven't read the books and didn't see the last movie, but I've given up on movies adapted from books they are 90% of the time pieces of trash.

They lack the detail that really gets us immersed and connected with the story and the movies come out with the feeling of being watch in fast foward speed, with scenes cut from one place/day/whatever to another in such a way that you get lost and see that they are trying to condence hundreds of pages in 1:30/2h of movie.

I understand that somethings from the books would simply not work in a movie but the creative libertys taken by the writers and directors most of the time come out wrong and detached from the rest of the plot.

Just my 2 euro cents and hope you Twilight fans like it, can't get myself to pick up the books because they are simply not my type of book.

Here's the truth about Twilight and the entire film franchise: Hollywood has finally found some merchandise that sells like hotcakes for the age group of 15-20 year old young women.

The first film has generally received negative reviews from critics, and although the first book in the series did receive overall positive reviews, the subsequent books did not. The franchise only really appeals to one demographic, and is therefore simply a flash-in-the-pan type of thing.

For further proof, think about every single type of Twilight merchandise. How much of it actually has images of Bella (Kristen Stewart) for consumption? What about Twilight stars in the media? Has Kristen Stewart's relationship status been constantly updated? Has she been featured on the cover of magazines as a stand-alone? No.

For some reason, females love to glorify everything. They create idols, and they create flash-in-the-pan type of things. Think about American Idol: the winner was a direct result of the audience being mainly composed of females. Also, why are the females always at the front of the show? Because they scream and cry for their idols. Do men do that?

So, my question is, why are you ladies all consuming these meaningless, materialistic objects? Why do you buy the Twilight DVD, the posters, the magazines. Why do you cry, and eat up every ounce of information on the product? From the outside looking in, you're a bunch of complete and utter morons. We could use Beatlemania as a comparison to this Twilight thing - and did consuming massive amounts of Beatle merchandise really have an impact on anyone's life?

Twilight is simply here to sap your money from you. Don't give in and constantly buy and become obsessed with the merchandise. I mean, they are milking it as much as they can. The second film comes out in November, for God's Sake. And then they'll hype the DVD release of that film. And then, they'll hype the release of the next film.

Keep buying, you morons. Just keep buying Pattinson's merchandise and "I like Boy's who Sparkle" t-shirts. See if you'll be wearing them when you're 30 and Pattinson is 50.

Morons.

JettaJameson

JettaJameson on 05-28-2009 12:51 PM

I'm a 26-year-old guy and I've read all 4 books twice and I own two copies of Twilight on DVD(gotta have every bonus feature available). So, moron, your point is moot.

Cole S.

Cole S. on 05-29-2009 09:32 AM

"I'm a 26-year-old guy and I've read all 4 books twice and I own two copies of Twilight on DVD(gotta have every bonus feature available). So, moron, your point is moot."

I don't know if you've ever taken any philosophy classes, but what you've committed here is a fallacy. You can't honestly use yourself and your own personal experiences as a representation of the entire male population. If you read my post properly, you would've have seen that I indicated that MOST fans of the Twilight series fell into the demographic that I pointed out, which is a much harder claim to refute. Therefore, my point is not moot. Finally, you only proved one of my points further - that most Twilight-ers are massive consumerist morons. You own all four books and two DVD copies? Can't you enjoy the series without overindulging in the Hollywood merchandise?

Although what I said may have been a rant, the main message was seen by one poster - Twilight is simply a fad. It's not original, and it's not going to be something that we'll remember in the many years to come. I mean, let's break it down: it's a love story between a vampire and a high school girl. That's quite original. Interview with a Vampire? Dracula (with Keanu Reeves and Gary Oldman)? Those are films that totally nail the depiction of vampires. Twilight is simply a fad, and pails in comparison to those two films.

Also, I've seen the first film, and it's probably about average at best. The chemistry between the two leads is very strong, but the plot isn't executed as well as it should have been. There were also a couple of scenes that could have been cut, and the ending dragged on too long. These reasons are why I felt the need to post - I don't understand why such a sub-par film is so popular. To compare, the Harry Potter franchise has constantly received praise both within its literal contexts and within the film franchise. So, what's with Twilight?

lolalovely

lolalovely on 05-28-2009 08:04 PM

In response to "What about Twilight stars in the media? Has Kristen Stewart's relationship status been constantly updated? Has she been featured on the cover of magazines as a stand-alone? No.," Kristen HAS been on the cover of various magazines like: Nylon, Vanity Fair, Teen Vogue, Creme, Entertainment Weekly, Seventeen, Jours de France, etc, ALONE. Just because she hasn't been on the cover of Maxim or Playboy doesn't mean she hasn't been featured on ANY cover. Her relationship with Michael Angarano has also been gossiped about, not that it's anyone's business. Her fame has risen since joining Twilight, but she has done a lot to try to make a name of herself.

P.S. Suck it (no pun intended).

Cole S.

Cole S. on 05-29-2009 09:38 AM

Alright Valeria, that's understandable. The only reason that I made that claim is because I'm a cashier at a grocery store, and I have never seen Kristen Stewart on the cover of a single magazine in the aisles. In addition, stores like HMV have never had her featured, and I haven't seen a bookstore with a "Kristen Stewart Picture Book". Also, I see that you failed to name me any Twilight merchandise featuring Stewart. So, you can go suck it, with a pun that's intended.

lolalovely

lolalovely on 05-29-2009 02:45 PM

*sighs* Twilight's merchandise has featured Kristen in several items. For example: dolls, candy, posters, pins, necklaces, stickers, shirts, etc.

I have to agree with some of the points. It just a fad that will blow out with the wind. I think what twilight needs is the count or some real vampire like from Blade. Then a vampire killer that just wipes out the "Vampires" with UV rays, stakes, and a Cross. He should be like a Priest, because Vampire are unholy in the eyes of our lord. I think the films and book need some of Frankenstien to spice up that love triangle into a square.

pinkincide

pinkincide on 05-28-2009 10:37 PM

Heh, I always thought Pattinson looked more like a Frankenstien than a vampire. Check out his pics. You could totally see him yelling "FIRE BAD RAARGGH!" He just needs some bolts in his neck.

Bigbrother

Bigbrother on 05-29-2009 11:27 AM

Cole, you also discounted one major difference between Twilight, Interview and Dracula. The money spent was vastly different as well as the target audience. If Twilight were able to attract Sir Anthony Hopkins to play Bella's dad and a young Winona Ryder to play Bella or Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt to play Carlisle and Jasper I'm sure it would have been of higher quality and done even better business, but they didn't hence why you have movies of vastly different quality. I think of Twilight as more of a Near Dark movie in terms of how much was spent to make on it and compared to that I don't think it suffers too terribly much in terms of special effects and quality of acting.

To your Beatlemania point, I think if you ever bothered to look at the images after John Lennon was shot or the number of people who STILL write to Ringo Starr or virtually any top 100 songs list you'd see that Beatlemania had and still has an effect on a good few peoples lives even though it was considered a fad 50 years ago. I think Twilight would be very flattered by that example.

Cole S.

Cole S. on 05-29-2009 11:38 AM

I know...after posting, I realized that some aspects of Beatlemania can't be compared to Twilight, as The Beatles became a much more artistic and influential group in music than Twilight has to film or romance. In short, The Beatles evolved and created quality music to make them one of the most memorable groups around, while the Twilight series merely got more drawn out and tiresome as time went on.

I'm with the last guy I know plenty of guys that love it too and my mum loves it and she's 51.. also to the guy earlier that said that he didn't think a vampire should be driving a volvo the whole point is that in the book thats the car he drives to be less conspicuous, he has many other cars that aren't including a vanquish, also Edward is trying to stay away from Bella but he finds it very difficult, the movie isn't great but I still like it love the books more though...

First L.

First L. on 05-29-2009 05:30 AM

I've been following some of the updates coming from the set, and well I think its going to be pretty good.
Seriously some of you people have no idea about whats going on with the story, yes Twilight did leave out some vital clues, but it did a pretty good job.

Many of your comments are really unnecessary, if you don't like Twilight or the books or haven't seen or read anything then I don't see why you have the need to comment on something you have no idea about, when i saw these pictures a while back i was excited and many would agree, but really if you don't care for these films and the books then don't comment, I'm sure there are a lot of people who find a lot of the stuff being said offensive, i was shocked at some things i read and sure things have gotten a little bit out of hand but that's what the books do, Stephanie's love of her characters transfers beautifully into the pages of her books, and in turn all you can do is love them too.
