A Closer Look at New Moon Director Chris Weitz

Will Weitz's background as an actor's director make a difference to the upcoming Twilight sequel?

During our visit to the set of The Twilight Saga: New Moon, we watched from afar as director Chris Weitz ran a seemingly tidy ship. His quiet, polite mannerisms, even during take after take, and his relative expedience moving from one set up to another spoke to a sea change from the type of set Twilight director Catherine Hardwicke reportedly ran: the focused, well-mannered workman vs. the wonderfully eccentric artist. The fans will be pleased, we thought to ourselves. Weitz looks like he knows what he's doing.

Coming into the project, Weitz's filmmaking pedigree was already impressive. In the span of just a decade, he's notched numerous successes under his belt, including an Oscar nomination (shared with brother Paul) for About a Boy; a hand in the successful American Pie franchise; and most recently, the honor of bringing Philip Pullman's enormously weighty His Dark Materials novels to the big screen, in the form of 2007's The Golden Compass. But our earliest familiarity with Weitz himself was as an actor in the darkly comic indie, Chuck & Buck, where he starred opposite Mike White's obsessive man-child as Charlie (formerly known as Chuck), a yuppie record exec trying to put his past (and his childhood buddy, Buck) behind him.

(Because of this, we find Weitz particularly fascinating. Watch Chuck & Buck and you'll understand why.)

Even more intriguing is the fact that his mother, actress Susan Kohner, notched an Oscar nomination for playing Sarah Jane in Douglas Sirk's Imitation of Life. Or that his grandmother, actress Lupita Tovar, was a successful silent film star well known for Mexico's very first talkie, Santa, and starred in Universal's Spanish-language version of Dracula.

Producer Wyck Godfrey, speaking exclusively to Rotten Tomatoes, surmised that Weitz's own acting experience and affinity for actors made for a remarkably comfortable working environment on the set of New Moon: "I think having been in a movie himself and having acted before, he really trusts actors and I think they can really feel that inherently. And as a result, we've gotten much more authentic, very natural performances from all the actors."

While on set, we spoke further with cast members and screenwriter Melissa Rosenberg to get their takes on the new director.

Melissa Rosenberg on working with Weitz, who she called a "lovely guy": "Chris is a writer himself, so I did one or two drafts with him, and was really able to trust him to take it from there, to make any changes that might need to be made for production or for whatever reason."

Taylor Lautner on Weitz: "What I love about Chris is, the set is very calm and we're just having a lot of fun making the movie. And then you sit back and you look at the results that are happening, and it looks amazing so far. I'm so excited to see it. And you just sit back and see what's going on, and you're like, 'How are we having such an easygoing, relaxed time making this movie, and it's turning out the way it is?' At the same time, the conversations with Catherine -- she just related to us so well. So does Chris. They're both talented directors, and I'm thankful that I had the opportunity to work with both of them."

Rachelle Lefevre on Weitz: "Chris is much quieter and calmer anyway, he just has a different style, but also he's come into a world that somebody went through all of that to bring to life. And so I feel like part of the reason he came in maybe a little more quiet was just sort of respect the fact that he didn't just show up and go, 'All right guys. It's Chris Weitz's Twilight now.' He didn't do that at all. He completely respected that somebody else had laid the foundation and he was like, all right, here's where I'm going to take it within the realm of what's already been established. And so it's a different job, you know? It's something that he's executing beautifully because we all really feel both directed and respected in terms of what we've already done. We love him."

When he was confirmed to direct New Moon, Weitz wrote an open letter to fans of Stephenie Meyer's Twilight books and Catherine Hardwicke's film. "I want to write briefly to try to put you at ease," he wrote, "and to give you reason to hope for and expect the best."

Now that you've seen the first few trailers for New Moon, what do you think, Twilighters? Will Weitz's dedication to Meyer's novels serve him for the better? Can a more focused set make for a more focused finished film? And how much of a difference might his ease with actors make in the finished performances we see on screen?

Jesus Christ. Can we get equal coverage for other films too? Twilight appeals to about 1/5 of the people on this site, so how is this as important as something like Avatar?

Also, I wouldn't be surprised if RT fixes New Moon's Tomato-meter by removing most of the negative reviews.

I thought Twilight got crap reviews? No amount of bad reviews will stop the this. I really feel sorry for these actors. Their fans are insane!

I'm waiting for some crazed Twilight fan to stalk one of the actors/actresses and kidnap them. Those pudgy dateless middle school/high school girls are psychos when it comes to Twilight from what I've seen.

Canuck666, I'm in high school and I'm an avid twilight fan. My friends and I are preppy and not ugly at all and we all read the books. You are incredibly ignorant. Crazy fans come along with anything that becomes this popular, its inevitable.
Please do your self a favor and put some thought into what you say.

RE4P3R, when more is revealed from Avatar we'll take your suggestion to mind. I would love to explore more about that film as well. Speaking of, who's signing up for Avatar Day?

While RE4P3R is right, the coverage on "New Moon" is 100% understandable. It will most likely be the BIG grosser of the fall/winter period, and even possibly the year. Record books, watch out. Plus, "Avatar" new is slim-to-none, as Fox is keeping the entire project under heavy wraps. Meanwhile, everyone involved in The Twilight Saga is entirely accessible. Kristen and Taylor are on Entertainment Weekly's cover for the Fall Movie Preview edition, if that's saying anything...

AND I AM SIGNING UP FOR AVATAR DAY RIGHT NOW AAAHH!!!!!

The Twilight books were a very good read. The first movie was horrible compared to the book, but that happens. This movie appears to be heading in a better direction, so I hope Chris can pull it off.

To all the haters.. If it is so stupid and insane, then why do you waste your time reading every post about it?

I have high hopes for Chris' New Moon- while Twilight is a wonderful book (and saga), the movie did not live up to most hopes. From what I've seen, the NM script will be much better (not as cheesy), and the trailers look brilliant.

The series appeals to a wide range of people- which is why the fanbase is so large, and we are just as enthusiastic about it as some were about LotR or Avatar.

Hmmm...well I'm 32, married and not an idiot so I'll just say, don't base your opinion of the Twilight books on either the fans or the first movie, which in my opinion was quite far off from the book. I'm a huge fan of sci-fi,comics, Tolkien, blowing stuff up in video games and all that, and it was like seeing what "filmakers" have done to characters like The Incredible Hulk ( Ang Lee's bouncing idiot) or Deadpool, even Venom, or God forbid the Star Wars prequels (which don't exist for me), Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen aka "Michael Bay raped my childhood" and dare I say Watchmen (which was an AMAZING novel), they take something that was good, interesting, and well-written and screw it up on screen or dumb it down for the immature. I hope the future Twilight Saga movies stick more closely to the books, if they do they'll be great. For me the books are what matter and if they can make movies that bring that to the screen, then wonderful.Every genre has fans that are an embarassment to the others so even though I get crap for loving the Twilight series, oh well. Oh and let's hope the upcoming Spiderman sequels learn from the last one jeez.

I see what you did there...

take the Twilight thread and turn it into an Avatar thread!

I've got no problem with that!

The countdown to the Avatar trailer continues at www.apple.com/trailers...(but it's only a 'teaser'...)

Avatar! Signed on for sure. Excited beyond words for that one. Oh yeah...twilight thread...I'm with Tomwaitsjr. Sigh. Let us all stop hating on it because it's abundantly clear nothing anyone says will convince these people its stupid. This poor excuse for literature and cinema brings out the internet hater in me and I don't likes it. We're going to have to just roll over and wait for it to be finished. Let's all us people with taste go jump start an avatar thread somewhere.

First off, I'm a twilighter, and i am not stalkish, nor did i ever consider kidnapping any of the cast members. yes some of us are absolute wackos but not all. some of us are actually mature.

Chris Witz, has done a great job and i'm sure the movie will look and feel amazing. November couldn't come soon enough.

Tarnation! With the 'Twilight' phenomenon spreading...the wussification of Youth Culture is virtually complete!

In my day if you wanted a good vampire flick, you watched 'The Lost Boys'. And that was the way it was and we liked it! We LOVED it!

And in my day if you wanted a good high school movie you didn't watch 'High School Musical' where the 'men' use a flatiron and prance around in a gymnasium! In my day you watched 'The Breakfast Club' where the only discernible hairspray and makeup used were on the actresses. And that was the way it was and we liked it! We LOVED it!

/Damn I'm old...

Bigbrother on 08-18-2009 11:55 AM

Because the Corey's are so manly? Love Lost Boys, but I remember my Dad talking bout how our culture was becoming wussified when it came out because all the vampires were wearing their glam rock make-up and Keifer had an ear ring. He's since come around since being introduced to Jack Bauer, and has forgiven Keifer his "Wasted youth" :)

Don't Tase Me Bro

Don't Tase Me Bro on 08-18-2009 02:54 PM

Well casting the other Coreys' collaborations aside, lest we forget that in the film one half of the Coreys' was a Frog brother [Feldman] and nothing the Frog's did was wussy to me...they were mostly pretty funny. Holy Water Pistols galore!

[Haim] was admittedly effeminate in the film (the dude had a Rob Lowe poster in his room for crying out loud!)...so your Dad might have a point there.

But what would your Dad say about today's brand of teen vampire film?

Bigbrother

Bigbrother on 08-18-2009 05:06 PM

Fair enough, and like I say I love The Lost Boys, was just making a point about how different generations see things differently. My grandpa always said Swarzenegger was a sissy compared to John Wayne, Lee Marvin and Richard Boone. They are what they are, but I think the books actually have some pretty badass scene's...mostly with the Wolves, and I'm still holding out hope that they can salvage the later films and fix some of the mistakes from the first movie. The recent casting decisions and hearing Weitz talk about it gives me hope. It's never going to be Near Dark or Fright Night, but that doesn't mean it can't be good. Lestat and Louis are some of the most effeminate vampires ever, but Interview with the Vampire was still a damn good movie and adaption.

King Kubrick

King Kubrick on 08-18-2009 09:18 PM

"No two bloodsuckers go the same way. Some yell and scream, some go quietly, some explode, some implode, but all will try to take you with them"= awesome. Not ****ing vampire baseball games in thunderstorm filmed with sub par smallville effects and ****ing vampires sparkling in sunlight. Sparkle, Sparkle.

Bigbrother

Bigbrother on 08-19-2009 05:34 PM

No ones saying the first movie was perfect. Far from it I think even a lot of hardcore fans acknowledge that the first movie could have been better and was made on the cheap, but back to my original point Micheal Sheen, Dakota Fanning and Bryce Dallas Howard are some pretty hefty acting talent to bring in if you're just mailing it in. Batman and Robin sucked, but was salvaged with Batman Begins, when they brought in better actors, a serious director and threw some effort into making it better...and baseball IS America's favorite pastime, even for the undead.

Don't Tase Me Bro

Don't Tase Me Bro on 08-19-2009 07:02 PM

Slight point of contention regarding Batman and Robin...mainly because Nolan's contribution was a thorough re-launch of the Batman franchise. New actors, entirely different concept, an entirely different style of writing, etc.

I don't think Nolan's success with BB & DK in anyway 'salvaged' the earlier attempts. The two 'concepts' are as distinct from each other as much as the AVP franchises are from their origins. So, for instance if Ridley's work on the Alien prequel knocks it critically [and commercially] out of the park, you wouldn't say that it 'salvaged' the AVP franchise would you? I think the same applies for 'Star Trek' and the 'Bond' franchise as well.

Bigbrother

Bigbrother on 08-21-2009 05:35 PM

You're right I should have said salvaged the franchise which after Batman and Robin had no positive buzz and was in much worse shape than the Twilight franchise. This was what I was getting at. Just saying that no franchise is ever unsalvagable. If George Lucas found the magic again and came out with a worthy Star Wars tomorrow all his haters would quickly begin flogging themselves and begging forgiveness which would probably have been a better analogy than Batman, think of Twilight the first as Attack of the Clones, a disappointing adaption which still had a few positive points that die hard fans enjoyed and was still really popular. I see New Moon possibly being like Revenge of the Sith, a clear improvement while probably still not reaching the love the source material has instilled in its fanbase.

I liked the books (not counting Breaking Dawn). The first movie could've been better. A lot better. I'm cautiously optimistic about this one, a) because New Moon was my favorite book in the series, and b) because the trailer already looks better to me than the entirety of the first movie.

I hope I'm not disappointed.

Oh, and 30 year-old happily married non-loser Twilight fan, here. Thanks.
