Tomatometer Watch: Will Twilight's New Moon Dazzle?

Critics review Edward and Bella's second chapter

N/A
With the memory of midnight showings of Twilight and Comic-Con fandemonium still fresh in Twilighters' and critics' minds, The Twilight Saga: New Moon bursts into theaters with no shortage of expectations this Friday.

Twilight stars Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart, and Taylor Lautner have been living on tabloid covers and causing Twiriots everywhere they've gone for the past year. We know the fans will be there and Team Jacob will likely enjoy his increased screen time, but what will critics think of the second installment of the love story between the Lion and the Lamb?

Critics were split on Twilight, saying that fans of the Vampire-infused book series would eat up the swoon-worthy moments of the big screen version of their favorite bizarre, beautiful boy and Forks, Washington's newest resident, Isabella Swan, despite the movie being short on plot and quality special effects. With the introduction of a whole group of new faces diving headfirst into the saga, including relative veteran Dakota Fanning, critics and fans alike will have a lot to discuss.
Current reviews of New Moon seem to tell a similar story to the first installment of the Twilight saga: Good for the fans and the movie's target demographic, less so for those less familiar with the story. Though many critics have said that the sequel is better than its predecessor (Twilight ended up at 49%), which gave Moon a strong early start. the movie's Tomatometer score has been steadily dropping and currently finds itself well below Twilight's final score.

Time Out New York's Anna Smith points out that "New Moon still has a handle on its young-adult audience: Hormonal frustration runs amok, and boys become attractive yet dangerous when they come of age (only the good ones keep their monsters in check)." And Smith reminds viewers, "This is a soap opera, folks-and acceptable escapism for those old enough to see it yet still young enough to shriek at undead dreamboats."
Urban Cinefile's Louise Keller writes, "The screenplay feels padded and the different strands of the storyline do not mesh together seamlessly. Performances however, live up to expectations with Stewart and Pattinson exuding the magic that reminds us why we care so much about their relationship."

Other critics, like James O'Ehley, call the movie critic-proof. O'Ehley says that for those outside of the movie's target demo, "New Moon has more teenage angst that any reasonable adult should be allowed to endure."

USA Today's Claudia Puig writes, "Though an improvement over the first Twilight film, this sequel (both based on Stephenie Meyer's best-selling books) drags and sputters, even in scenes meant to be infused with passion." Many critics agree with Puig, saying that the sequel is an improvement over Twilight, but Roger Ebert says "The Twilight Saga: New Moon" takes the tepid achievement of 'Twilight,' guts it, and leaves it for undead."
Check out RT's Twilight Corner for the latest interviews, pictures, videos, set visits and more as theaters prepare for Twilight's brand of star-crossed love to return to screens this weekend. And of course, check back here and on New Moon's movie page for the movie's much anticipated Tomatometer.

Where will New Moon's Tomatometer ultimately land? Take your best guess in the comments below! And for those that step into Stefenie Meyer's world this weekend, be sure to rate and share your two cents in our community section.

I've heard a couple of early reviews call this film "not as good as the first" or something along those lines. Based on that, and the fact that the earlier positive reviews are in and it's STILL only at 54%, I'll call for this one to end up lower than the first film's 49%.

My final guess- 38%. Enjoy your sucky sequel, Twilight fans.

I'm guessing New Moon will end up at 43%

"hahahaha oh god i hate everything. "

I'm not sure why, but this made me laugh hysterically for about 3 minutes. I read the books in high-school, and like them even though though are pretty crappy, but these movies suck and have become a completely ridiculous fad. At least they are puttin these things out as quickly as possible...it should all be over in two years...then maybe some dignity will flow back into the under-20 female persona.

How could New Moon possibly be anything but a crippling mediocrity?

My guess : 44%.

Consensus will obviously go along those lines : ''...will still please the fans, but overlong and too convoluted for those that didn't bite the first time around'', or some other lame pun.

hahahaha oh god i hate everything.

Dark Knight fans around the world will have to cry themselves to sleep as we watch our Highest Midnight Box office record fall. New Moon will do good at the box office but it hasn't attained Harry Potter status yet because the films don't appeal to everyone. if you look at who is going to thsee films it isn't teenage boys who hollywood has been banking on every summer since the 80's its girls. a film like new moon simply doesn't have the broad appeal that a movie like transformers or pirates of the carribean has. the first film wasn't even something to write home about. A movie like the dark knight got its big box office numbers because it had the appeal of being a great movie combined with the fact it was a summer blockbuster. And lets face it robert pattison is no Heath Ledger.

Did Titanic appeal to guys? You know the highest grossing movie of all time? Just saying. Us nerds can muster great numbers, but the ladies are in it with the stamina. All that money on the first film which was decidedly mediocre. If this one is even reasonably good I think it'll put up huge numbers. I'm calling 48% on the meter, but it'll still be a better movie than the first. The lower score will be a result of the greater Twilight hate currently going on.

I think your forgetting a few things about titanic
1-it was an amazing movie, it won 11 academy awards and if im not mistaken Twilight might have been up for some razzies last year, and no an mtv movie award for best films isn't the equivalent
2-guys had things to pay attention to during that film....a sinking ship and people being killed...a naked kate winslet....in tiwlight we can't stare at robert pattison for 2 bloody hours and be entertained
3-James Cameron directed titanic, and lets face it he is one of the greatest directors of all time, and he'll most likely prove it again in december with avatar
And yes girls will follow this movie to the grave, but that doesn't mean the movies are any good

I like to know from NTrost and nick M. whether they actually cried in Titanic. (Major chick flick movie with a little nudity from Kate Winslet, big deal) Also, Kate Winslet was more naked in "Jude" than in Titanic. Even though "Jude" came out before "Titanic" it didn't garner as much revenue as much as the movie with the fake love story built in with actual history.
Also I'm going to side with Ktomas on this one!!!!!!

@bigbrother

Oh please! don't be comparing "Twilight" to "Titanic". All the misguided internet haters can say what they want but James Cameron's "Titanic" is a modern day classic film whether they like it or not. That film actually had broad appeal from males (I'm talking straight guys here) & females from young to old. It was an exceedingly admirable with old-fashioned melodrama & solidified special-effects let alone consisted of solid direction from James Cameron & with stout & plausible acting.

"Twilight" on the other hand which is just a joke from top to bottom let alone a joke to the fabric of vampires. Robert Pattinson is one-of-the-most wooden actors to grace the silver screen if not ever (just as any professional acting coach). He has no charisma on screen let alone he seems to be missing charasmatic & characteristic elements in terms of the art of acting. I mean a 2x4 has more charisma then he does. Pattinson is a fad & will disappear over time after Twilight is finished. He wasn't anything when he was in the 3rd & 4th Harry Potter films. So, he will fade away over time.

Kristen Stewart meanwhile is a young & durable actress & will grow as an actress over time as she has shown. She has range just from films like "Cake Eaters" & "Adventureland" showcase that. She just needs to get away from this below average material like "Twilight" as she is better then that.

Actually, I found Titanic to be a fantastic movie. Just because a movie is a Romance, it doesn't turn off guys -- it just has to be a good movie, with a good plot and characters . . . everything the Twilight saga does not have.

If there is any justice in the world, the master copy of the film will get sucked into a vortex, along with all the preteen twihard girls.

Girls who like this movie will not grow up to be normal women.
They will grow up to be mormon housewives who will write their own books, starting a pyramid chain reaction and OMG WE ARE ALL DOOMED!!!
