So I went and saw 2012 today. The Avatar trailer played up front. It was the same scene I viewed online, and afterwards I still had the same reaction... Meh.

It's spelled "mech" not meh, dude. MECH! Excuse me while I go play with myself again whilst watching the trailer. Again. :)

nogard46

nogard46 on 11-21-2009 02:51 AM

I just got back from New Moon I have to say its was much much better than the first and really touches on some really deep and profound eternal themes. I will elaborate. I will list these themes out but just like most great films, great stories they are not obvious to the casual audience.

1) The movie was very Shakespearian, right off the bat it alludes to R J but if you watch the movie and pay attention to it, the film has a lot more to do with Hamlet, "to be or not to be". The movie is about choices and the contemplation of those choices, whether Bella will chose Jacob or Edward, whether Edward will turn Bella.

2) it touches on themes of class warfare, Jacob is dressed down (I know cuz he has to change) but it presents him in a very simple plain kind of way, in simple words it makes him look poor (and notice how he has to run everywhere? he has no car) while Edward and the Cullens Drive volvos and Porshes and dress very fancy. Its the bourgeoisie vs. the proletariat all over again.

3) There seems to be a lot of racial tension (yes I know not the race card) Jacob and his friends are very dark, dark hair dark eyes, while Edward and the Cullens are lily white skinned with light d hair.

I really don't think Stephanie Meyers touches upon these themes by accident. With a degree in English Lit, I don't think she is capable of creating mindless enetertainment as her critics have charged. These books, these movies have an effect and the ability to connect and move large quantities of people for a reason. The critics would say its for the simple minds but I would argue rather its the other way around the simple minded critics wants to take the easy way out and dismiss these profound themes.

That is the most intelligent thing I have ever read about Twilight. Good points all.

They can have all these 'featurettes' about flash hardware. But the film is all about this hardware losing to some flying lizards, rhinos and elves.

Booooooooooo

Yawn.

screwhead100 on 11-21-2009 04:42 AM

1st of all i cant believe u referred to new moon as Shakespearian, so after i seen that i just had to keep reading.....

does jacob have to run everywhere even when he is human or are you talkin when he is strictly that fake looking wolf/dog?!?!

& i honestly dont see any race thing goin on, even though i have only seen the trailer.....unless all the members of the wolfpack are black.....b/c jacob looks like he is from greece or italy....& edward just looks like he has some type of skin disease....he doesnt even look caucasian, he's alabaster (michael jackson) skin tone......

so unless you mean some ancient roman/greek thing vs ancient (very white people) ? nordic thing than i have no idea what your tryin to get at

JRW1980

JRW1980 on 11-21-2009 06:14 AM

I don't think Meyers actually understands the deeper meanings of the Shakespearian plays she copied and pasted together into her Twilight series. The series happens to have deeper themes running through it because of this fact. If you have ever tried to read the books, they are horribly written. I don't think the deeper themes were done intentionally because of this fact. The two movies so far have both been awful. If they actually put more focus on the deeper elements that are in there and blend it with better action, they could be great. They concentrate too much on a dumb teenage girl who, in my opinion, is in need of some serious medication. Think about it. If a girl you hardly knew falls in love with you and wants to commit suicide if she can't be with, you'd say she was crazy. Edward has lived for over a century; he can't see this? He sure doesn't act like he has wealth of knowledge that comes with living a long life. They would also need to address the tons of other stupid elements in the films. I won't go into them now as my post is already a bit lengthy.

Sam t. on 11-21-2009 12:34 PM

You know, the problem to your post is that, if you had actually READ the books you would understand why the movie was so angst and dark (that is if you have seen the movie at all). This is the dark chapter in the saga to illustrate just how much they need each other, it wouldn't be the first time it gets compared to Romeo and Juliet, and Stephenie Meyer does have a degree in English Literature so I highly doubt that everything she wrote was out of pure coincidence and stupidity. If you did find the books lengthy and stupid why continue reading the 4 books at all, and if you stopped reading them, how would you know what to compare them with if you didn't finish them? I think this movie (and in turn the books) does touch on social, racial and Romeo Juliet issues and in turn is a very deep, yet light way to approach and discuss the themes through the views and words of the author (director, in case of the movie).

JRW1980

JRW1980 on 11-21-2009 04:18 PM

Sadly, I sat through both of the Twilight films. The books, no, I didn't read them all. I only attempted to read the first two. I hardly read either of them as I found them boring and uninteresting. The movies themselves have generic character designs, obvious subtext and bad plots. Since they are supposedly very close to the source material, that only leads one to believe the books are similar. If the third or fourth movies are any good, I'd give those books a chance. I do know a quite a few avid readers and college lit. majors that have read them all and they have all told me the books really don't get much better.........In the end though, regardless of how good or bad the books may be, they are popular among kids and, much like HP, it got them to read more which is a great thing.

I can see where you're coming from JRW and appreciate the intelligent commentary to why you don't like them. I've read all the books and I'd have to say Ecclipse is the best with New Moon and Breaking Dawn in a tie for the least interesting. What was always interesting to me was how well Meyer captured the desperate Teenager we all once were. Not that all of us were like Bella or Edward or Jacob, but I think if we're honest most of us remember a time when every little thing we did seemed to skew to the extreme. Everything was either the most important thing ever or the most boring thing ever. Some of us never grew out of that if the RT threads are any judge :)

The Tennessee Williams poster looks fantastic--very film noir.

What does James Cameron want out of AVATAR if anything?

The AVATAR images ARE spectacular indeed and AVATAR IS a "must-see" film; yet AVATAR is just a movie that will open, do its business, and then head to "On Demmand" and DVD (home markets).

nogard46

nogard46 on 11-21-2009 01:22 PM

haha its so nice for people to right away assume you don't read. I actually have read the first 2 (I don't have a lot of time on my hands when I find time I will read the rest), so I do know a little of what I'm talking about. And I love how people assume Twilight has very little to do with literature and promoting literacy, trust me I've seen it first hand how much the movies and reading the books go hand and hand. But of course I don't have concrete factual evidence of how much they are related. Only annactodal meaning everyone I know who are into the movies have read the books. Maybe there needs to be a poll done at the theaters, everyone that buys a ticket needs to answer a survey of whether or not they have read the book?

i dont think avatar will be mindless scifi action?
i think it will have alot of emotion with its characters
it reminds me alot of pocohontas or something. with the lead guy falling for the native. but i do agree that avatar hasnt been exciting me. the trailers arent doing it for me. the effects are amazing the acting seems to be too but idk i just hope everyone sees it that way james cameron isnt beaten to death with his script by fox.

Sadly, I fear "The Princess and the Frog" will flop big time. Not that I particularly care about that movie, specifically. But it will just further confirm traditional animation is completely dead.

However, on a positive note, you simply can't beat those prices!
