Synopsis: When American air force general Lawrence Dell (Burt Lancaster) is framed for a crime he didn't commit and sent to prison, he vows vengeance against those who put him there--including the president... When American air force general Lawrence Dell (Burt Lancaster) is framed for a crime he didn't commit and sent to prison, he vows vengeance against those who put him there--including the president (Charles Durning). After staging a daring breakout with fellow inmates Powell (Paul Winfield) and Garvas (Burt Young), Dell commandeers a Montana missile silo and threatens to start World War III if the government doesn't divulge the sordid reasoning behind its Vietnam War policy. Along with other late-20th-century political thrillers such as SILKWOOD, MIRACLE MILE, and THE CHINA SYNDROME, TWILIGHT'S LAST GLEAMING draws heavily and effectively on the fear of human annihilation by means of nuclear holocaust. Convincing sets and special effects aid director Robert Aldrich's creation of a believable crisis situation. Lancaster cements the film's terrifying fusion of realism and nightmarish suspense with his performance as the frenzied malcontent with his finger on the button. [More]

It's easier to admire Twilight for its intent and its astonishing cast than for what it actually achieves.

This film isn't very high on realism, but it's exciting.

Intelligent sociopolitical thriller that is effective despite being overlong, stiffly acted and executing a rather nutty plot.
