Among the dancers are Bjørn (Adam Tønsberg) and Kirsten (Ulrikke Bondo). Bjørn's friend Erik (Lars Simonsen) has to leave, to care for his ailing mother while his father (Bent Mejding) keeps an appointment. Before they leave, Bjørn notices the beautiful Anna (Camilla Søeberg). Soon he discovers where she lives. Erik thinks he might have a chance with Kirsten, but she is interested only in Bjørn. Initially, TWIST AND SHOUT seems like any other coming-of-age movie. But soon its unique, sharp flavor becomes apparent. On discovering she has a rival, Kirsten is snottily unhappy. More mature than Bjørn, Anna falls for his handsome good looks. When events turn sour, Bjørn must be resourceful to avoid being trapped. Erik's father is not the caring but strict parent he appears to be, and the browbeaten Erik has to find a way to save his mother. TWIST AND SHOUT is striking, tough-minded, and astringent. Its young actors give wonderfully detailed performances. It is subtly directed by Bille August, from the beautifully crafted script that August cowrote with Bjarne Reuter, author of the novel on which it is based. [More]

The moments of uplift in the film are rare, and they might lead you to believe that no one gets out of their teen years alive.
