It isn't long before the local police comissaire, Edourd, takes an interest in the case, and who, unfortunately, is one of Simon's close friends. As Simon and his crew prepare for a much larger heist using the stolen money, Edourd begins to put the pieces of the puzzle together, creating a difficult situation for both friends. A deft and stylish thriller from director Melville (LE SAMOURAI), whose influence is still felt today by directors as diverse as Quentin Tarantino, Jim Jarmusch, and John Woo. It was his last film. Original French title: UN FLIC. [More]

Everything that has come to be known as "Melville" exists in some form throughout the film's 98 minutes. The flaws present are those of the greatest auteurs' autumnal works. Full Review |

Plays beautifully with all [Melville's] trademark silence, grim faces, and gloomy colors. Full Review |

Fragile beauty Deneuve gets little more than a walk-on as the woman carrying on with both men. Full Review |

A bitter meditation on disenchantment and defeat, as glacial and hermetic as Deneuve's face. Full Review |

Mr. Melville's obsession with technical information is sometimes taken to lengths that border on the crazy. Full Review |

Although ill, Melville still managed a dark edge and a sense of camaraderie among villains and cops in his last take on his preferred genre, the American thriller. Full Review |

It's a darkly atmospheric film noir with Melville linking his characters to the silent landscape around them. Full Review |
