This movie, benign and conventional as it is, needs a gutsy performance to keep it from sheer sogginess. The biggest surprise the movie generates is why it’s taken this long for Lane’s career to take off.

Consensus: Though formulaic and superficial, Under the Tuscan Sun is redeemed by Lane's vibrant performance.

That's exactly what Frances (Diane Lane) does in UNDER THE TUSCAN SUN, directed by Audrey Wells (GUINEVERE). Traveling in Tuscany after a heart-wrenching divorce, Frances surprises herself by making an offer on a rundown villa--the biggest impulse purchase of her life. With the help of a warmhearted, smitten real estate agent and a local contractor with a team of Polish workers, her 300-year-old house is slowly transformed into a home. Along the way, she encounters a larger-than-life British ex-patriot, kind and generous neighbors, and a charming Italian man or two. Essentially, the film is an affirmation that good things can happen if one lets them--and that sometimes what seems like a terrible mistake or a crazy idea is a really a blessing. Lane is completely engaging as Frances, second-guessing her speedy purchase, looking for love, and rediscovering herself. Based on the book by Frances Mayes, the film was shot on location in Rome, Florence, Positano, and Cortona in Italy. The breathtaking scenery is sure to have viewers saving their pennies for next year's vacation--or their Tuscan dream house. [More]

Reviews for Under the Tuscan Sun
...Some unexpectedly good subplots and beautiful scenery make this fluff particularly palatable.
compared to Lane, pretty much everything else in this film falls flat
While the plot sounds a bit schmaltzy, Lane's performance keeps Francesca real...
Sensual, luscious, vibrant filmmaking, and not a single frame of it is tepid or mundane.
Warmth and joy fill the movie. Some of it comes from that sun over Tuscany, but most of it comes from the inner radiance of Diane Lane.
Filled with realistic and sometimes quite witty dialogue, and Diane Lane is right there for every scene.
The movie is sweet but deeply suspect: It's like Lost Horizon re-imagined by a realtor.
... some of the most beautiful photography in any film I've seen this year.
[Has] an emotional core of realism that is so precise and delicate and pinpoint accurate that it's overwhelming...
It's lovely under the Tuscan sun. The book is better, the film beautiful to look at. Take your pick, or enjoy both.
Under the Tuscan Sun seems to be coasting on its pretty pictures of flower-drenched Italian landscapes.
Like the crumbling Italian villa at the center of this story, there is a lot wrong with the movie, but it is so enticing -- especially for its intended audience -- that it is hard to resist.
Under the Tuscan Sun pretends to be juicy, but it doesn't allow any dribbles. It purports to make love all over us, but not without laying down lots of paper towels first.
Picture-postcard scenery and Diane Lane's charisma makes up for an unrealistic plot and syrupy dialogue.
A first-class travelogue of sights and scenes; its whole, ultimately, is less than the sum of its parts.
a postcard-pretty wish-fulfillment comedy-drama, as light and enjoyable as a big scoop of gelato on a hot afternoon.
