I'm happy for [Lane's] recent success and for the chance it gave her to be the spotlighted leading lady. So I really wanted to like Under the Tuscan Sun more than I did

That's exactly what Frances (Diane Lane) does in UNDER THE TUSCAN SUN, directed by Audrey Wells (GUINEVERE). Traveling in Tuscany after a heart-wrenching divorce, Frances surprises herself by making an offer on a rundown villa--the biggest impulse purchase of her life. With the help of a warmhearted, smitten real estate agent and a local contractor with a team of Polish workers, her 300-year-old house is slowly transformed into a home. Along the way, she encounters a larger-than-life British ex-patriot, kind and generous neighbors, and a charming Italian man or two. Essentially, the film is an affirmation that good things can happen if one lets them--and that sometimes what seems like a terrible mistake or a crazy idea is a really a blessing. Lane is completely engaging as Frances, second-guessing her speedy purchase, looking for love, and rediscovering herself. Based on the book by Frances Mayes, the film was shot on location in Rome, Florence, Positano, and Cortona in Italy. The breathtaking scenery is sure to have viewers saving their pennies for next year's vacation--or their Tuscan dream house. [More]

Reviews for Under the Tuscan Sun
Wells acknowledges that in adapting Mayes' memoir she jettisoned anything uncinematic ... and nailed up a popsicle-stick frame of a story that can't support the weight of the movie's "love is just around the corner" theme.
It's lush, funny and has poignant moments that make you want to get out your passport and go find your own adventure.
Despite an aimlessly ambling plot, this travelogue fantasia of Italian sights is redeemed by Diane Lane's charm.
It's as scattered as a painting by Jackson Pollock, as forgettable as a mid-season replacement sitcom on UPN, as moving as a boulder, and as predictable as a self-flushing toilet. It's The Lizzie McGuire Movie for middle-aged folk.
My exhibit M this year alone on why Gigli CAN’T be the worst film ever made.
'Under the Tuscan Sun' is a mess from beginning to end and the only thing that saves it from complete disposability, besides the pretty scenery, is the presence of Diane Lane, who is funny and charming enough to briefly cover up the fact that she is in a
Tuscan Sun is that rare film that fully draws out every character until they seem as real as your dearest friends. The result is unquestionably the best date movie of the year.
Despite its overly pat plot and a glaring lack of conflict, Lane pretty much saves the movie.
It's all played very light and totally calculated to please the audience.
Under The Tuscan Sun is the perfect tonic for all those who have not yet realized that the right place can nourish and nurture spiritual transformation, even after the worst heartbreak.
Unapologetically girly, drippingly romantic and, if you don't object to movies about female heartbreak and fate-with-a- capital-F, an entirely satisfying treasure to savor from start to finish.
Forget about getting a refill on popcorn. Your first instinct while watching Under the Tuscan Sun is to call a travel agent.
A predictable lightweight comedy-drama that believes in second chances, risk-taking and loving a house.
Tuscan is not deep -- it only wants to make us happy for a couple hours -- but it has a few surprising moments that pull us into the characters' stories.
