Underworld Prequel Focuses on Werewolves
Ah-ooooo, werewolves of Underworld.
by Fred Topel | January 15, 2008
Discuss Article
The hook of Underworld was vampires fighting werewolves. Now the third film, a prequel currently known as Underworld: Rise of the Lycans, gives the werewolves the lead. Producer Tom Rosenberg explained the differences in werewolf style to the full on Underworld style.

"It's more like the flashback scenes in 2," said Rosenberg. "Remember in the first one Michael Sheen's wife Sonia was killed by Bill Nighy, by Viktor, and that was his daughter?  That was the back-story for Michael Sheen.  Obviously this is how they meet and Michael Sheen becomes the leader of the werewolves.  This is told from the werewolf's perspective, not the vampire's.  It's their story and their battle with Viktor."

Rosenberg assured that this departure was consistent in the original plans for an Underworld trilogy, and that a fourth film with Kate Beckinsale and Scott Speedman is still possible.

"I think it's the strongest story that we've put together of the three.  I think it's really terrific.  I think it leads to a fourth.  When we did the first Underworld, we imagined three: the first one, a sequel and then a prequel.  The third is a prequel, so the fourth would carry on where Kate and Scott Speedman left off after 2, so I think this is going to be terrific."

i thought it was 1 2 3 4...apparently its 2 3 1 4...hmmm. i must have gone to the wrong school. out of Van Helsing, Underworld and Blade...this is the least likeable series i think. take away the hot chic, and i'm not sure you have as good of an idea as ya think. gimme another Blade...

Everyone lay off. These movies are sweet. Better than Van Helsing are you kidding me? That movie was laughable. At least these movies have sweet rated R action. What are you expecting a feel good story here? I expect nothing less than werewolves and vampires kicking the crap out of each other. I'll be upset if they try to make it any more meaningful than that.

I actually enjoyed both of the Underworld movies. I'll wait and reserve judgement on this one until the trailer surfaces, but I certainly don't mind the idea of another film or two for the franchise.

I am an Underworld fan, but I am really uneasy about an Underworld without Kate Beckinsale. She is such an important ingredient in why this franchise is so successful. I'd feel better if I knew that before I pay for my ticket to see this that Kate Beckinsale is officially on board for a 4th Underworld film. Otherwise, I will probably go into this one believing that this film was created because it was the only option they had left to go with the story.

yeah wow put the crack pipe down! No kate in underworld? Yeah how about we make POTC 4 with no Johnny Depp? or lets make another Borne movie with out Matt Damon as Jason Borne? How about Shrek 4 without Mike Meyers as Shrek?

Kate beck in UW is about the single most sexiest damn thing ever in all of cinematic history. (well mayeb Fey Wray in King kong a close second)

come on everybody!

We WANT KATE! WE WANT KATE!

1 was a pretty awesome action movie and had an interesting story to boot.

2...i can barely remember what happened, so that's never good.

If three had some good buzz around it, I'd probably see that, and if it did well enough and 3 really set it up, i'd like to see some big conclusion.

both of the underworld movies were great, and now it is even going to be more interesting hearing things from lycan's (werewolves) perspective. We can expect a lot of gore and less tight leather suits (sigh, no kate beckinsale)

underworld 2 was a thrown together mess of a movie.

lay off blade. underworld 1&2 don't have anything on that series. Even Trinity was better than underwold 1.

Ill take Blade 1 over any of the underworld movies and van helsing (I hope they dont make HVII). Plus I liked the techno with fight scenes.

Instead of focusing on werewolves, the writers should try to focus on making a movie that isn't absolutely terrible like the first two. It is projects just like these that make me feel little to no sympathy for the WGA.

Bleh. I certainly support the WGA strike, but I'd love it if the writers could come back to write stories that are really better than this. Gah! Where, oh, where has the originality gone?
