Diane Lane is the best part of an otherwise unimpressive movie.

It is a very windy day and, caught by a particularly savage gust, Connie falls and bumps into bookseller Paul Martel (Olivier Martinez) in the process. She scrapes her knees, and Paul invites her into his apartment. She stays only briefly, leaving after attending to her knees. She passes the accident off as trivial to Edward. But, she is drawn to the younger man and soon returns to his apartment with eventually disastrous results. UNFAITHFUL is based on Claude Chabrol's classic LA FEMME INFIDELE (1969). The drama has been shifted from Paris to New York City by scriptwriters Alvin Sargent and William Broyles Jr. Beautifully lit by director of photography Peter Biziou, UNFAITHFUL is staged with rare subtlety by director Adrian Lyne. Diane Lane gives an extraordinarily fine performance, viscerally conveying how torn Connie is between her attraction for Paul and her love for Edward and Charlie. There is excellent support from Gere, Martinez, Sullivan and Zeljko Ivanek. UNFAITHFUL is the rare case of a remake that measures up to, and maybe even surpasses, the original. [More]

Reviews for Unfaithful
Not much to complain about here. Except that Hollywood doesn't come up more often with surprises this pleasant.
No, you are not more surprised than I am at my rating. Diane Lane delivers Oscar worthy stuff in a tightly made film.
As a dramatic, erotic, romantic, existential (or not) thriller, Unfaithful almost but not quite succeeds.
Infidelity drama is nicely shot, well-edited ... and features a standout performance by Diane Lane.
Annoys with predictability for the first two-thirds, and unintentionally amuses with silliness for the last 30 minutes.
Quiet, adult and just about more stately than any contemporary movie this year... a true study, a film with a questioning heart and mind that isn’t afraid to admit it doesn’t have all the answers.
The bravest thing in Lyne's telling is its acknowledgment that sexual passion is often beyond the grasp of rationality.
With her earthy prettiness and WASPish demeanor, Lane effortlessly shifts between soccer mom and sexpot depending on the situation.
Not only does Diane Lane look sensational, she also finds the perfect qualities to play the guilty wife.
We end up hot but not bothered. It's the bothered part that good films examine.
