The film mostly revels in nostalgia and feels numb.

Consensus: Slick on the surface but loaded with artful touches, Brian DePalma's classical gangster thriller is a sharp look at period Chicago crime, featuring excellent performances from a top-notch cast.

Kevin Costner is idealistic federal agent Eliot Ness, whose assignment to clean up Prohibition-era Chicago leads to violence and manly questions about upholding the law. Initially powerless to stop the flow of booze into the city (the police force is corrupt and everyone in town seems to be on the mob's payroll), Ness finds guidance from an older streetwise cop (Sean Connery, who won an Academy Award for this role) who convinces him he'll need to break some rules if he wants to bring down head mobster Al Capone (Robert De Niro). Andy Garcia and Charles Martin Smith play Ness's other recruits, who together must stand tall against a city full of assassins. Director Brian De Palma (MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE) packs the film with violence and creative camera movements while David Mamet's intelligent script capably dodges cliché at every turn. There's a real sense of what's at stake for these characters on a personal level, which contrasts nicely with the futility inherent in enforcing Prohibition in the first place. The film is based on the autobiographical book by Ness (cowritten with Oscar Fraley) and the 1959-63 TV series; Ennio Morricone (THE GOOD, THE BAD, AND THE UGLY) composed the uninhibitedly bombastic score. Reviews for The Untouchables
a magnificent movie about political clout -- a worthy subject that Hollywood’s rarely bothered to tackle and usually gets wrong
Kevin Costner is at his best here as crime-fighter Eliot Ness in this David Mamet-authored film audaciously directed by De Palma.
It's one of the all-time great gangster flicks, a gorgeously realized production that places archetypal heroes and villains in the service of a rip-roaring storyline.
It's one of the all-time great gangster flicks, a gorgeously realized production that places archetypal heroes and villains in the service of a rip-roaring storyline.
The pacing is lethargic as the director seems to treat this saga of law and order with mock seriousness.
...it does not have a great script, great performances or great direction.
The end result can easily pass as mindless mainstream entertainment, but make no mistake: The Untouchables is one of De Palma's most trenchant statements about the state of America.
Steeped in De Palma’s glorious violence and sinuous cinematography, but stripped of his tricky sensuality and his anarchic self-reflective wit.
Another dePalma triumph of style over substance, climaxed by a great homage to Eisenstein
an exciting piece of pulp action that plays fast and loose with the historical facts
A big film, an exciting film, and it will likely be the big film of the summer.
De Palma's stylish crime-gangster tale is extremely enjoybale in large measure due to the set-pieces and homages to Sergio Leone and Eisenstein, but also to Sean Connery's great performance for which he deservedly won the Supporting Actor Oscar.
Superb performances, exquisite direction and that Ennio Morricone score create an authentic 1920s Chicago feel and a hugely entertaining crime drama.
The results are watchable enough, with a particularly adept use of Sean Connery, Chicago locations, and period details.
