The characterizations are fairly coarse cartoons, in contrast to the emotionally rich cartoons that have become Pixar's hallmark. They're more schematic than organic, and that applies to the plotting as well.
While I think your crazy as a reviewer, see DK and and Zohan, at least you are seemingly objective and point to something about the story I didn't notice or disagree with. Quite frankly your RT rating and your review don't seem to well, 'coalesced' ...
His review is well written and I think it's fairly obvious that he doesn't care much for animated movies. Going through his reviews, one of the only CG movies he's given a fresh rating to is is Wall-E.
The_Em, That's not quite true that Joe doesn't care for animated movies. He absolutely raved about The Incredibles, and was even convinced it should have been a legitimate Oscar contender for Best Picture! Michael L. Johnson
Mr Morgenstern, I want to thank you for giving an *honest* and insightful review of why you didn't think "Up" was worthy of a fresh rating. Your review was very well written and honest and I appreciate that from a critic, even if I disagree with him. It's nice to see a reviewer, who doesn't agree, do it on the merits of the film, and not just someone wanting to go against the grain.
Lets understand this is really a senior on a cruise having to fight off all the locals. And always returning to the safety of the ship. Bad Bad locals, damn foreigners.
Congratulations on seeing the character flaws too.
those are minor criticisms. what makes you jeopardize your reputation by giving a reveiw you know no one will agree with because of these supposed flaws in an awesome movie?
its too stand out. cause I have never heard of Joe Wtf morgensterr.
This is exactly what happens when you grow up in an orphanage. You end up comparing fathers and nuns with real fathers and mothers. Idiot, if you didn't like the movie, you could have scratched your *** and taken a hike. Why write a review?
Quick question, Joe... (and I'm not being facetious here)...
Do you now understand how badly you blew this one?
I mean, I just got around to seeing "Up", and I can't imagine how anyone who didn't watch it with their head up their *** could possibly give it a bad review.
This movie is a good litmus test for critics: if you give it a "thumbs down" review, you should quit. (Or be fired.) You have permanently lost any credibility you may have ever had.
Wow...I am disappointed in the Wall Street Journal for hiring such a charlatan like you. I am going to write many emails to the Wall Street Journal trying to get the people there to fire you. I hope after you are fired and lose everything; you will understand how lovely and yet painful this movie was to one's heart.
The characters featured in this brilliantly animated cinematography brought TEARS TO MY EYEBALLS. This film is the epitome of Pixar's hallmark. Mr. Morgensterr, you emotionless gargoyle, take the death of Ellie, for instance. If there is anything more organic and emotionally rich than the relationship between Carl Fredricksen and Russel, then my name is not Choo-Choo Train (for now) and your name is Charles Muntz.
