I understand that an 'elegant' drama requires a leisurely pace, but Up at the Villa crawls on its belly.

The setting is Italy in the late 1930s--fascism is on the rise, and British expatriate Mary Panton (Kristin Scott Thomas), a penniless young widow, is searching for a new husband who will be able to support her. She has all but made up her mind to accept wealthy Sir Edgar Swift's (James Fox) proposal when the situation is complicated by the arrival of a debonair American playboy, Rowley Flint, played by Sean Penn (who is cast against type here). A flirtation develops between the two--but it is yet another suitor, Austrian war refugee Karl Richter (Jeremy Davies), whose amorous advances Mary finally succumbs to out of pity. When Richter realizes that a continuation of their love affair is out of the question, he commits suicide. Now it's up to the rakish Rowley to save Mary from the consequences of her fateful one-night-stand, even if it means being arrested for murder. Directed with Haas's trademark flair for beautiful scenery, UP AT THE VILLA is an elegant cinematic adaptation of a novella by Somerset Maugham. [More]

Reviews for Up at the Villa
The story line, full of malevolent fascists and romantic entanglements, isn't particularly invigorating.
If you're determined to see it, show up fifteen minutes late and avoid the slow getting-to-know-the-characters sequence.
The production values are relatively high, the atmosphere of a dying aristocratic world is palpable, and the plot is tense and engrossing.
Whether it was simple nostalgia or something else that drew [the Haases] to Up at the Villa, it feels like the last shot fired in a war that was settled long, long ago.
Up at the Villa is lovely to look at, but it doesn't make a great deal of sense.
Unveils the different shades of love and the ways we can unsettle our lives through impulsive sex.
For novelty value, you can do worse than seeing Sean Penn in a rare chance to don evening-wear on screen, but this isn't a sight to sustain a two-hour haul.
Kristin Scott Thomas just makes an already annoying character--Mary is whiny and selfish--even more grating with her broad, overly mannered performance.
Drenched in overheated romance, decadence, and lightweight political intrigue, Up at the Villa clanks along for almost two hours.
I found myself rooting for these foolish, pampered, naïve people, and rooting for the movie as well.
This film is full of pretty pictures, nice decorations and beautiful scenery, but lacks any palpable romance, tension or chemistry.
One of those movies about the surprise of suppressed passion bursting free that I can never get enough of.
