gratefuldawg writes: on Jul 19 2007 10:00 PM Looks like a still shot from some gay Nazi WWII porno film. Is the eyepatch covering up that lazy eye working overtime in A FEW GOOD MEN. Seriously though, Cruise is no longer a revelant actor. His public flaunting of percieved importance shows that the man is nothing more than a by-product of Hollywood. (Reply to this) |

SLICKMAN120 writes: on Jul 19 2007 10:36 PM In reply to this comment (#951064) So in other words, gratefuldawg, your not a fan of film... Just the persons life outside it defines their work. I see, so let me get this straight. A film is supposed to take us to another place, being a different genre is a different place; it allows us to escape reality for that very moment when all is down. Yet, a persons real character out side their work is supposed to effect the escapism that film lets us have? I'm a bit confused here. (Reply to this) |

jon_jay writes: on Jul 19 2007 11:19 PM Nevermind that Tom Cruise is starring in this movie (which who I think is a terrific actor), but this movie also marks a long-awaited reunion for "Usual Suspects" director and writer, Singer and McQuarrie. Doesn't come out for awhile, but looks fairly decent so far. (Reply to this) |

MarkMortimer writes: on Jul 19 2007 11:46 PM In reply to this comment (#951198) So you would be quite happy watching a paedophile portray someone else on the big screen as long as YOU were immersing yourself into the fantasy of film!!! I know he isn't a paedophile, I am making a point and that point is that your logic is flawed :) (Reply to this) |
|
Bigbrother writes: on Jul 20 2007 12:41 AM In reply to this comment (#952034) Actually your logic is flawed because Cruise who we're referencing hasn't done anything criminal. Being odd is still not a crime in most countries of the world. As long as he makes entertaining movies he can be as weird as he wants to be off it within criminal limits of course. (Reply to this) |

wiggins writes: on Jul 20 2007 03:12 AM "a terrific actor" in my opinion, is someone who is versatile and has the ability to really disappear into their role and actually "become" their character. gary oldman is the first example that comes to my mind, but of course there are many others. whenever i watch a tom cruise movie, i immediately know i'm watching tom cruise. don't get me wrong, he's been in plenty of good movies, i just feel he has very little range and is more of a "movie star" than an actor. gratefuldawg writes: on Jul 20 2007 09:08 AM In reply to this comment (#951198) To reply to your statemtent, I absolutley love film, if not I would've plunked down $20 to see CHUCK&LARRY. But film though it provides escapism is also art. To discredit film as less is truly illogical and would point the finger of "film hater" towards yourself. True art is considered in the eye of the beholder, but there's a reasons why velvet Elvis and Clown paintings aren't hanging next to Whistlers Mother. Im merely pointing out like other's that Cruise among a few of todays top actor's; aren't actors. Their a product or "Movie Star", call it Hilton Phenom or what have you, being hyped upon the public, unfortunately people buy into the fantasy and allow for ****ty careers to prosper. taran72 writes: on Jul 20 2007 09:32 AM Great actor, despite his crazy personal life. All the offscreen attention given to him is just a product of this tabloid, over-exposed bull***** society. Twenty years ago, he'd just be another excellent (no not Oldman level) actor who's been married a couple of times with kids. Movies are escapism, get over it. If you are sitting there watching this movie and still thinking of his couch jumping, then you are a shallow moron. That still does not excuse MI:2 or Vanilla Sky. (Reply to this) |

Marnye writes: on Jul 20 2007 02:02 PM A German actor like Sebastian Koch (who played the part in a TV film a few years ago) should have played the part, he is a better actor than Tom Cruise and he really disappears behind his roles, he is unrecognizable in "Speer und Er" and he knows German history. Seriously undercuts what might've otherwise been a solid argument. In reply to this comment (952432) I tend to agree with you with the following modification: TC is kind of like Nicholas Cage in my opinion- At the beginning of all their movies, you look at the character and go "okay, in this movie Tom/Nic is playing himself as a ." ..and yet, at the end of most of their movies, I find myself believing in the character, even if I never really scraped off the 'Tom Cruise' or 'Nic Cage' identity from the character. Great example: trying to accept NC as a Russian-descended arms dealer in 'Lord of War.' At first, you're like 'WTF, you're name is 'Yuri'!?!' But by the end of the movie, I bought it. Silverence writes: on Jul 25 2007 01:30 PM I dont know much about the plot of this movie but I do know a little about the history of what its about, and unless the History Channel has lied to me, this isn't really going to be one of those big effect shoot-em-up's or anything even resembling an action movie. I'm completely down with that, but for me It brings into question Cruise's casting in it. I actually really like Tom Cruise. Yes, Yes, hes a little nuts but so is half of Hollywood these days. If it isnt scientology, its kabala. Or cocaine. But anyway, my point is, that everything that I've seen Cruise in that I've enjoyed him has been some sort of action picture, or at the very least a hipster rom-com like whatever the hell Jerry Macguire was. I normally would be perfectly fine with him, but do you really want to see Tom Cruise, looking as goofy as he does in that picture, talking (with a German accent nonetheless) for two hours? If they had to shoe horn someone into the role I much rather would have had them go with someone with a little more versatility. Clooney or someone similar. Interestingly enough, on that thought, if I could choose anyone for that role, it would been Clooney's costar from Goodnight and Good Luck, the guy who play Edward R. Murrow. (Reply to this) |
