Through in-depth interviews and clips of performances, the film focuses on biological women who push the boundaries of gender norms. Featuring drag kings Mo B. Dick, DRED Gerestant, Storme Webber, Diane Torr, Del la Grace Volcano, and Bridge Markland, this film is a fascinating look at a world that the mainstream rarely recognizes. Some of these women perform as men for the sense of empowerment they experience; other drag kings are embracing a natural affinity toward the masculine. Del la Grace Volcano and the "New Men" take the process a step further by experimenting with testosterone in order to increase their masculine aspects. Overall, the transformations these women undergo are astonishing, whether for purely artistic reasons or for more deeply rooted emotional ones. Baur captures the passion that the performers bring to the stage and never judges their motives or choices. Instead, she presents a world that many people may have never considered, and makes it accessible to the masses. [More]

Reviews for Venus Boyz
Venus Boyz is not a pro/con documentary in which each 'side' states its case; it's something more intimate, a succession of interior explorations by each performer.
Although Ms. Baur's meandering style betrays her inexperience as a documentary filmmaker, she nonetheless treats her subjects with compassion and dignity and avoids exploiting or vilifying her subjects.
This documentary, rich in humor, voyeuristic delights, some keen and controversial insights, and smart visuals, is no drag.
Unfortunately, Baur doesn't seem to have either a thesis or an editor as she lets each segment meander without purpose.
It's not uninteresting, but so much footage is given over to earnest discussion of sexual politics that the overall effect is like sitting through a semester's worth of transgender studies.
[Baur] has clearly earned the trust and respect of her subjects, the first qualification for any responsible documentarist, and they have repaid her with an intimate glimpse into their singular lives.
Though it sometimes errs on the side of artiness, the film offers considerable illumination on the lives of those who live and thrive along sexuality's margins.
Filmmaker Gabriel Baur's doc is only about sex to the extent that you can't have sex without identifying yourself as something -- and how you identify yourself has a lot to do with how others treat you.
while the documentary is informative, as entertainment it veers into repetition and extremism which will marginalize its audience
Experiencing this form of gender exploration is like discovering a new color in the rainbow. And it adds a whole new meaning to the phrase 'You go, girl!'
Fascinating discussions... but there is so much repetition that it starts to get boring and people sharing their innermost secrets shouldn't be boring.
Earnestly -- if not altogether adroitly -- examines masculinity as a performance, demonstrating that biology is not destiny.
