Verity's Summer (2013)
Movie Info
This film is a coming-of-age art-house drama. It is the story of a young woman's journey from the security of childhood to the compromises of adulthood and moral ambiguities of love. It is also an intimate portrayal of a family coming to terms with the traumas and violence of distant war that are brought back home.

Views of the Northumberland coast are sublime but, for all its sincerity, this is self-consciously arty and a little stultifying.
Crowe's references to relevant political circumstances are well executed and the approach is fresh.
Difficult to criticise aesthetically or on the basis of its performances, Verity's Summer is nevertheless a promising but perplexing debut feature let down by a low narrative pulse that makes it difficult to care.
