Reviews for Very Bad Things
It's entertaining to a degree, but lacks all of the elements necessary to form a truly compelling motion picture.
The trouble is that Berg doesn't seem sure how to draw matters to a close.
Shameless, eager-to-shock energy, with a crafty script and a flawless ensemble cast to match, make this beyond-black comedy a very good thing indeed.
Peter Berg's Very Bad Things isn't a bad movie, just a reprehensible one.
There are some hysterically funny bits, but the excessive violence sometimes kills the laughter.
He [Berg] stages several legitimately funny moments of ghoulish humor and builds the comic and dramatic tension to a hilariously out-of-control finale.
A Swiftian satire on white yuppies -- it's American Psycho with five psychos.
The gross-out humor lacks edge, the guilt never kicks in, and the outrages are predictable. It's one flat brewski.
Very Bad Things is a well-constructed study of the human psyche and how it eventually cracks under intense pressure.
Berg ... brings wit, energy and a twisted kind of joy to a story that's little more than a tasteless anecdote.
...the film wages a war against one's moral senses in a story that's unforgettable.
Very Bad Things is a horrible hoot. It is one of those movies that put you through the wringer. It doesn't tickle the funny bone -- it pulverizes it. You don't know whether to laugh, gasp, or walk out.
...Berg's listless direction brings the film so little point of view that it doesn't much matter who lives or dies.
...one of the more effective black comedies to come around in quite some time.
The most delightfully morbid film of the year, a movie that goes so far over the deep end with its outrageousness and violence that I couldn't help but be won over by the material.
