I want to know how clumsily delivering punch lines in halting English while playing a shrieking harpy is in any way Oscar-worthy.
Because Penelope Cruz speaks fluent English and is not a shrieking harpy, her performance can thus be labelled as acting. If you didn't know, the Oscars generally go to people who act.

endorse. She's an eyesore and an ear-sore. I say NOOOO to cheap comicbook feisty Latin stereotypes, and thespish media-wh*redom: she's been hogging the camera since she was kneehigh to the proverbial, and her ideal role would be Lady Macbeth (for the ruthless greasy pole-climbing)

She's not supposed to be pleasant, she's a histrionic artist! Also, anyone who has ever spoken a foreign language would know, that the lines do get halting, when you are emotional and not speaking native. She did it right. The critic judged from his own narrow life experience.

That stereotype applies to Latin American women, not Spaniards.

This movie does not exist without Penelope Cruz. She is smart, talented and charismatic actress ,who should had gotten Oscar long time before.I have never read more stupid review.

I agree with this review. It started off well, but after Cruz came into the picture the whole thing went down hill. I don't she's as terrible an actress as this review would have you believe, but she is least interesting female character yet the movie insists upon focusing on her for too much of the run-time. Also, how the hell is the male lead in anyway romantic? There is nothing charming or genuine in anyway; in fact, he comes off as just a pretentious, whinny sleazebag.
One of Allen's most overrated movies; watch 'Stardust Memories' (Allen's most underrated movie) instead.
