Perhaps the characters are a bit underwritten, but this is a feel good film that is not wildly ambitious.

Whimsical Australian fable with the soul of a tourist brochure.

Wendy Hughes and Chris Haywood are good in the lead roles but the supporting characters -- an assortment of bubbly tourists and small-town eccentrics -- just aren't original or interesting enough.

It's not designed to leave audiences rolling in the aisles, but it will put a smile on your face and make its way into your heart.

The MacRaes direct with a sure enough hand for The View From Greenhaven to feel like an accomplished debut.

The gentle toughness of the subject is perhaps deceptive, as the Macrae brothers embark on a story about a man who has shut down three decades ago and has just about used up all the leeway his family is prepared to give him.

I loved every minute of this instantly involving film in which our hearts smile, weep and turn corners just like the train that carries its passengers to its mystery destination.

I wasn't sure what to expect from ?The View from Greenhaven?. It is the first feature length movie from the MacRae brothers. The story revolves around the lives of a aging couple Dashiell (Chris Haywood), and his long-suffering wife, Dorothy (Wendy Hughes). Dashiell is a grumpy old man, deeply affected by a tragedy some 32 years ago. With their marriage on the rocks, their daughter buys them tickets on a mystery train tour. What transpires is unexpected, and leads us on a journey as Dorothy discovers the life she could have, and Dashiell, the life he has taken for granted. The film has the perfect balance of humor and discovery.

Chris Haywood and Wendy Hughes contribute stunning performances. After seeing the film I learned that Chris and Wendy were once married. Perhaps a little irony with the film characters, but their interaction on-screen is authentic and magic.

The MacRae brothers have written a wonderful script and delivered it perfectly to the big screen. The Australian film industry has been lean on quality films in recent years. The view from Greenhaven will not disappoint.
