Brazilian singer-songwriter-turned-politician Gilberto Gil may be taking a "musical voyage" around the indigenous populations of Australia, Africa and his homeland but documentarian Pierre-Yves Borgeaud is all at sea when it comes to making his point.
It's a joyful, illuminating tale of rootsy world music, enhanced by viewing it through Gil's eyes.
It's a heartwarming experience, a little reminiscent of Wim Wenders's Buena Vista Social Club, and the music is attractive and authentic.
Gil is a serene and compassionate figure although the film only offers sketchy information on his life and career.
I felt that though the film's musical interludes had colour and life, the political discussions were a little blandly right-on.
A sweet-natured but soporific slab of positive musing - and positive music - featuring Gilberto Gil, Brazilian singer-songwriter and Lula-era minister of culture.
