Movie Info

Filmmaker Chuck Workman (PRECIOUS IMAGES, SUPERSTAR: THE LIFE AND TIMES OF ANDY WARHOL, THE SOURCE), a frequent visitor to Anthology over the years, has been hard at work recently on a labor of love: a documentary on the world of avant-garde and underground cinema. Focusing predominantly on Jonas Mekas and his many invaluable contributions to avant-garde film culture - not the least of which was his principal role in the formation of Anthology Film Archives - VISIONARIES is in large part a celebration of Mekas and Anthology. So it's extremely appropriate that the film has been completed just in time for our 40th anniversary! As part of the celebrations, Anthology is thrilled to present a weekend of screenings of VISIONARIES, a film aimed at avant-garde enthusiasts and new initiates alike, and fresh from a very successful run at the Tribeca Film Festival! Fairly bursting with clips from a wide variety of experimental films, both classic and contemporary, as well as interviews with filmmakers (Kenneth Anger, Su Friedrich, Ken and Flo Jacobs, Robert Downey Sr., Norman Mailer), critics (Amy Taubin, Fred Camper), and scholars such as Scott MacDonald, VISIONARIES is an in-depth portrait of a realm of cinema rarely documented so perceptively. --© Anthologymore

Visionaries' heedless montage brought back the sense of crazy possibility that excited me when, as a teenage kid from Queens, I first encountered Mekas's world.
