After his release in 1990, Mandela continued to campaign for an end to minority rule, an era that came to an close in 1994 when he was elected president of South Africa in the nation's first election which allowed all citizens to freely participate. Mandela left office in 1999, but has continued to work tirelessly as a voice for human rights around the world.
