One of the most original war movies ever made. Men die miserably every day for lack of what is found there.

In VOICES IN WARTIME an array of poets offer their attempts at encapsulating these experiences in verse, with both amateur and professional practitioners of the art offering some thoughtful words on the subject. Their poetry is interspersed with commentary from people who have actual experience of going into battle, and those who have dedicated their lives to documenting the history of war; soldiers, journalists, and war historians all contribute. Some of the poets come from far flung corners of the globe, while others are from locations closer to home, making this an eclectic gathering of artists who have been moved to bring their sombre compositions into the public domain. Reviews for Voices in Wartime
Making poetry cinematic requires greater imagination than King evinces...If the medium isn't always as sturdy as the message, that's a fault that can be readily overlooked.
Voices in Wartime is a thoughtful, provocative exploration of the ways poets have dealt with the experience of battle throughout history.
An important new documentary that looks at the ways in which poetry helps people come to terms with conflict.
Filled with some of the most powerful poetry and shattering images ever to come out of warfare.
Rick King's stirring documentary Voices in Wartime is not, as you might guess from the title, a compilation of soldiers' battlefield letters to their families back home. This intense little film is about poetry.
...fascinating and extremely literate documentary Voices in Wartime manages to present the poet's position on war without turning completely into an anti-Bush film.
Stodgily structured by intercutting grisly stock footage with talking heads and muddy videos of Poets Against the War events, Voices in Wartime isn't nearly as cinematically inspiring as many of the poets it brings to light.
[A] poorly organized mishmash of archival war films, scholarly chatter, and literary quotations.
It's interesting that, in a documentary about war poetry that supplements literary readings with the occasional use of exceedingly bloody archival war footage, the words more than hold their own against the pictures.
The film’s self-limiting pacifism precludes a closer look at the poetry of war, which is not synonymous with poetry against war.
