===Shows of the 80's===
Voltron: Defender of the Universe (1984)===================================

Back, when I was a little kid, I used to watch some pretty cool shows. Or at least, I thought they were cool and they were, during the time period. However, I realized, that I had been obsessed with the show, Voltron, for quite some time and had been looking for the show, ever since I was able to buy my own things and not too long ago, I was able to buy 3 of the collections.

The collections, are packaged in metal tins and feature the lion artwork on the front and on the back, the character art and their lion's full-body in a constellation form. The three volumes that are currently out are the following:

Collection I: Blue Lion (Episodes 1-15)
Collection II: Yellow Lion (Episodes 16-29?)
Collection III: Green Lion (Episodes 30-45)
Collection IV: Red Lion
Collection V: Black Lion

Each collection, is 3 discs and has bonus features as well. For instance, one of the bonus features, talks about how the show came to be here in the U.S. What it was, it was a show that was sent over here by mistake (it was supposed to be some other show, but the people who were looking into properties and animation at the time, didn't get exactly what they were hoping for.) Instead, they got a show titled "Hundred-Beast King Golion" After they received the show and looked at it, they were interested and eventually got the rights, to a certain number of episodes. They said, that they tried several networks and licensing companies and they all said pretty much the same thing, They basically said, that a show such as "Golion" wouldn't do well, it wouldn't sell merchandise, etc. They figured, that the american market wasn't ready for a show that hailed all the way from Japan.

Also on one of the discs, it has a discussion how they came up with the name. They had started out with various names containing "vol", and other variations until finally, someone came up with VolTRON. The guy, who came up with the name, said that he put that on the end of of the "Vol" because at the time, a disney movie called Tron was about to be released or was released.

To be honest, for its time, the american dialogue fit the show well. But, as I rewatched the episodes, I noticed, that some of the guys who did the pilots of the Lions, played the voices of female characters. I forgot, over the years, just how cheesy some of the voices were on that show. However, Keith, Lance, Pidge, Sven, Hunk, Princess Allura, Nanny, Coran, Lotor, Hagar the Witch and King Zarkon were definately rememberable.

Out of all the characters, Keith, Pidge and Princess Allura were my faves. As for the Lions, they went Black, Blue, Green and then the mighty robot itself.

The show, which aired in 1984, became really popular and spawned many different kinds of merchandise. for instance, Matchbox (who also creates die-cast cars), created a series of die-cast metal lions, but, many if not all, were recalled, because of lead-based paint that was present on the toys. they, the toyline passed to another company who made the lions in plastic, instead of metal. Other products that were introduced, was apparel, hats, pajamas, the Castle of Lions playset as well as many other interesting products.

anyway, lets get on with the characters, plot and the other two not-so-well-known voltron series'.

===============

CHARACTERS

===============

The characters of the show, is what makes the show interesting. in the Show Voltron: Defender of the Universe, there are several who have their own ideas, goals and personalities. Down below, is a list of the characters in the Lion Voltron (or Voltron of the Far Universe).

American Name: Keith Akira Kogane

Original Name: Akira Kogane

Age: 20's (?)

Rank: Commander

color (uniform): Red

Lion: Black Lion (Forms Head & Torso) (Pilots Blue Lion until Key is found for Black Lion)

Commander Keith is the leader of the Voltron Force, who was sent, by Galaxy Garrison to help out the planet Arus and to free the Far Universe from King Zarkon's oppression. Keith is a balanced leader and tends to speak his mind on almost anything. Keith also has a known hobby for reading books either in the pilots' lounge or in his room. He also likes to ponder on strategies and ideas in order to win against King Zarkon and his minions. During the series, it appears, that Keith, has deep feelings for Princess Allura, though, as far as I know, the feelings are only shown by facial expressions. the pair never confess their feelings to one another.

American Name: Lance Charles McClain

Original Name: Kurogane Isamu

Age: around 21-23 years of age.

Rank: 2nd in Command

Color (Uniform): Blue

Lion: Red Lion (Forms Right Arm) (Pilots Blue Lion once)

Lance, is the second in command to Keith. He also loves to joke around and give sly comments and he is the only one, with enough guts to stand up to what Keith has to say. Lance can be quite daring and is also seen, to be a ladies man.

American Name: Darrell "Pidge" Stoker

Original Name: Suzuishi "Chibi" Hiroshi

Age: Around 12-13 years of age.

Rank: N/A

color (Uniform): Green

Lion: Green Lion (Forms Left Arm)

Pidge is the smallest and youngest member of the Voltron Force. Because of his size, he uses his speed and agility fully. Like all the other pilots, he is also well trained in Martial Arts and he graduated from the space academy at a very early age. His actual specialty, is in the field of science. He is also good friends with the space mice, and many children on Planet Arus.

American Name: Sven Holgersson

Original Name: Shirogane Takashi

Age: 20's

Ranks: Original 2nd in Command before Lance

Color (Uniform): Black

Lion: Blue Lion (original Pilot)

Sven is the a Norwegian Pilot. he was the one to take the original pilot of the Blue Lion. Not long after becoming a member of the Voltron team, Sven was injured, by Haggar the witch and sent to a planet called Ebb (However, in the original Japanese version, Sven was killed.) After the planet is attacked, Sven is thrown into prison and spends time with Allura's cousin, Romelle. After escaping, Sven was reassigned to live with Romelle and her younger brother, Prince Bandor on Planet Pollux. Sven is a very quite person, and even though he doesn't show it much, he is very emotional and his heart, is always in the right place.

American Name: Princess Allura

Original Name: Princess Farla

Age: 18-20

Rank: Princess of the Planet Arus

Color (Uniform): Pink

Lion: Blue Lion (Takes over for Sven)

Princess Allura is the only heir to the throne of the Planet Arus. She is beautiful and regal, but also, likes to spend time with the other four Pilots of the lions. (as seen when they all go swimming and she wears a Bikini, which promps Nanny and Coran to pretty much freak out. More so Nanny though lol). Allura can also be a bit Naive, especially when romance is involved. She never hesitates to speak her mind and is a strong-willed person, she is also fully capable of ruling her kingdom of Altair and the planet Arus, though Nanny and Coran don't think so as much. Princess Allura is also capable of Invoking the dead. Particularly her deceased father King Alfor, who offers the princess much wisdom and council in times of need.

American Name: Tsuyoshi "Hunk" Garett

Original name: Seido Tsuyoshi

Age: 24-26

Rank: N/A

Color (Uniform): Orange

Lion: Yellow Lion

Hunk is the muscle of the group, and pilots the Yellow Lion, which forms the Right leg of the mighty robot. This pilot, may look tough and mean, but, deep down inside, he is a big softie (especially for children) and He is never late for a meal. even though his friends tease him about his appetite, most of Hunk's bulk, is actually muscle.

That does it for the Pilots. As for the Allies, I won't go much in to detail, but some of their allies include the following people:

Nanny, Coran, Princess Romelle, Prince Bandor, Space Mice, King Alfor

Also, the people of the Planet Arus and the Kingdom of Altair are willing to fight for their Princess and the Defender of the Universe, Voltron. However, it takes a little time for them to finally come out of hiding and to trust those around them, as well as the five pilots of the robot lions. When they finally begin to trust again, they are willing to sacrifice their lives for what they belive in and to protect their princess, planet, homes and family.

======================================================

STORYLINE

======================================================

At the beginning of the series, Keith and the rest of the Space Explorers from Galaxy Garrison are on their way, to planet Arus, in hopes of helping out the planet against King Zarkon and his minions, son (Prince Lotor), and a demented witch, named Haggar and her pet, a blue cat that can be a total pain in the ass.

During the first episode, Keith and the team, are captured thrown into the dungeons on planet Doom. During this whole time, they are trying to get to planet Arus and to find out about the legendary robot, Voltron, in hopes to activate it and use it to defend the universe from Zarkon and his minions, as well as protecting the planet, Arus.

During the first episode, the team is able to escape and crash land's on the Planet Arus and they eventually, make their way to what appears, to be a ruined castle on a hill. The castle, appears to be deserted, until they meet the caretaker, Coran, who tells them a little about the castle and so on and so forth. It isn't until the Princess Allura arrives, that Coran finally allows them inside.

After a time, they tell the team of Space Explorers about Voltron and that Haggar had disguised herself as a beautiful Goddess and lured Voltron to her (Voltron, at this time, was one whole Sentient Being :::Meaning, it had intelligence of its own:::) and with her dark magic, broke Voltron up into five pieces. Each piece forming a different colored Lion and each Lion also landed in a specific location, surrounding the Castle:

BLACK LION = Sleeps as a statue infront of the castle and formed a Winged Lion arch.

BLUE LION = Sleeps in the Lake next to the castle

RED LION = Sleeps in a Volcano

GREEN LION = Sleeps Under a tree in the deep forest

YELLOW LION = Sleeps in the desert underneath the harsh sands.

After explaining many things, Coran tells the would-be Pilots, that they are out of luck, because the Keys to activate the Lions had been lost and were not yet found. But, soon, familiar face and voice to Coran and especially Princess Allura appeared and told them, where to find the keys.

This voice and face, belonged to none other than King Alfor, Princess Allura's desceased father. He told the team, that the Keys were located in his crypt deep underneath the castle. Once there, they opened the coffin and found four of the keys to activate the Lions, but the Fifth key, the one to activate the Black Lion and the Head and body, was missing.

It wasn't long however, that the Planet Arus was soon under attack by Zarkon's forces to recapture the Space Explorer's who escaped his planet. Having no other choice, the team goes out in four lions instead of five. Somehow, they were able to pilot the lions and come back victorious.

But, the victory was short-lived, for Zarkon and Haggar unleashed a robeast upon the planet and now, the team, needed the fifth key more than ever. After some persuasion, Pidge was able to locate the fifth key to activate the Black Lion. Come to find out, the Space mice had taken it to their nest. It was supposedly a gift from King Alfor before he died. Now, with the fifth key, the team, could form Voltron and defend the planet, its Princess and her kingdom. It is also during this time, that the new Castle of Lions is born and rises from the ashes and rubble of the old castle. The new castle is a complete fortified building that is built from steal and is fully equipped with weapons and armarments to help defend the planet and to back up voltron. The castle also helps with the training of the pilots, by firing on them and attacking them as if they are the enemy.

It isn't until episode 6 that the team faces their first loss. Sven is severely injured and is thus, unable to be a part of the team again. He is sent off to a planet called Ebb to heal. It is at this time, that the Princess decides that as the leader of her people, she should be the one to pilot the Blue Lion. Much to Coran's dismay, that is EXACTLY what she does.

Now, that Voltron is once again awakened, the planet and the universe will be a safe and peaceful place to live once more.

The Storyline is a really good one. though, I wish they would have included the original Japanese version too. But, supposedly, those are to be released later on this year. Anyway, this storyline is classic and is one of my fave shows the from 80's

=======================

SHOW DIFFERENCES

=======================

Back in the 80's cartoons had to be clean. and what I mean by clean, is that characters weren't supposed to die, blood and gore had to be kept out, and intense torture situations, so on and so forth. down below is a small listing of things that were changed to fit our standards over here in the United states

------------------------------------------------

It was a Goddess who divided Voltron because of his arrogance, not Haggar.

However, some things were left in, if they were in small quantity. For instance, there are some parts, where blood is still shown. (trickling down the forehead, etc.) But, that is about it.

In the original Japanese version, There were EXTREME images of violence, torture as well as other things. For instance things such as beheading were most DEFFINATELY left out.

The violence in the original was alot worse than what we seen here in the states. I also think, that language was changed too.

Planet doom Soldiers (Grunts) were refered to as "robots" when they were killed or blown up in their space craft. the same goes for armada fleets.

Characters such as Shirogane (aka Sven), he was originally killed in the Japanese version, but, because of restrictions here in America at the time, deaths weren't allowed to be shown. So, scenes of Shirogane's funeral, as well as the tearful good-byes were cut from our version and was instead replaced with him being injured and sent off to another planet to heal.

Another case of a character getting killed in the original Japanese version, was Nanny. Nanny was killed in an episode called "Coran's Son Runs Amok", Nanny is shot and mortally wounded by a character named Garret while protecting Coran. It is after this, that the scenes of Coran and Allura visiting her grave are cut from the show as well.

I know, I didn't do a good job of explaining things in this part, but I hope to revise this and make it sound much more presentable at a little bit later date. Until then, this will have to do. ^^()

=====================

EPISODE GOOFS

=====================

During the series, and while watching the newely released Collections, I came across several things I never noticed in the series before until now.

Down below is a small list of what I have discovered so far.

1. THE QUICK CHANGE KID = In one episode, Pidge does a quick-change routine. In the episode he is wearing his Lion flight suit when he is rescued. but, during a quick frame change, Pidge is in his normal outfit and then the next frame appears and Pidge is back in his Pilot Uniform.

2. LOOKS LIKE YOU MISSED A SPOT = There are a couple of episodes where this happens. If you look closely at the lions, there seems to be some color/s missing.

3. WHITE BADGE OF NOTHINGNESS = This is a small goof and can be easy to miss. In some episodes, Keith's badge (the one that looks like an upside down "V") is missing the background color to it.

4. IDENTITY CRISIS: In one episode, I caught this little goof. They showed a picture of Keith and instead of Keith's voice, it was Hunk's instead. Talk about an identity crisis lol!

So far, these are the only ones I have found. There are others, but I haven't documented anymore at this time. I will post more as they come.

=======================

FINAL THOUGHTS

=======================

For it being an old 80's cartoon, Voltron: Defender of the Universe is still one of those classic cartoons, that fans will want to see again and again, or at least I think so.

I really like the newly released collections and look forward to more installments. One of the interesting things about the pakaging, is the artwork and the unique Lion tins that contain the three disc sets, each. Inside the tins are fold-outs that show artwork that was done by the crew at World Events Produtions, because they were unable to find media that featured the original artwork from that time period and so the artwork was redone from scratch, and captures the atmosphere and intensity of the original artwork in my opinion.

Each set, contains bonus features from the produces, directors, music composers, commercials, featurettes and more. One of my favorite bonus features, is the Robot Chicken episode, "You got Robo-Served' in which Voltron is in a dance contest with a Robeast and then continues to take him down after the fight. it is a hilarious episode, that I watch over and over.

altogether, I give the sets and the rerelease of the series a 9/10. Now, I can't wait for the release of the rest of the series. However, I won't get the Vehicle Voltron or the Gladiator voltron. I am a Lion Voltron fan only, through and through!

Until Next time....

Activate interlock! Dynotherms connected! Infracells up! Mega thrusters are go! LET'S GO VOLTRON FORCE! Take care and feel free to let me know what you think of this classice 80's cartoon)
