As the twin revelations of a wonderfully unexpected pay-off prove, in the end there's no substitute for wit, invention and real, priceless humour.

When Jackie and Michael discover that someone in their town has won the national lottery, they intend to uncover the lucky individual and talk him into sharing the jackpot with them. Trouble arises when they discover it's good old Ned Devine, and no longer is he one of the living. The citizens must band together and fool the authorities into believing that Ned is still alive, in order for them to receive the money and share it amongst themselves. [More]

Reviews for Waking Ned Devine
It is the lack of pretense and Jones' light touch that allows this confection to float successfully.
A rollicking and playful comedy that encourages us to catch joy as it flies.
Gorgeously shot by cinematographer Henry Braham, it has the warm feel of an evening spent next to the fireplace, pint in hand.
A superbly crafted comedy that might just make you long to leave the antiseptic climate of your cosmopolitan hub for the cozy intimacy of a life in the provinces.
It's worth seeing. Parts of it are truly moving, and one wildly comic moment with Michael on a motorbike will not be soon forgotten.
Although his movie is not entirely without substance (themes about religion, morality, and spirituality abound, as one can guess from the title character's name), it's basically designed to allow the audience to have fun.
an inspired if sometimes uneven offering, mixing broad physical comedy with touching melodrama and a few hints of dark black humor
There's no particular message or great meaning to be found in writer-director Kirk Jones' film, just some good fun and a few hearty laughs.
The beauty of this film is its simplicity. It's good old-fashioned story-telling, following the increasingly desperate attempts of a group of lovable rogues to fill their pockets.
Some well-timed chuckles more than make up for the inadequacies -- and besides, there's no underestimating the charms of the film's aging leads, Ian Bannen and David Kelly.
