Synopsis: Landon Carter (Shane West) and his friends are the coolest kids in Beaufort, North Carolina. They wear the right clothes, drive the right cars, and get into just enough trouble to be rebellious.... Landon Carter (Shane West) and his friends are the coolest kids in Beaufort, North Carolina. They wear the right clothes, drive the right cars, and get into just enough trouble to be rebellious. Jamie Sullivan (Mandy Moore) is the opposite--there doesn't seem to be anything cool about her. The preacher's daughter, plain Jamie wears big boxy dresses and the same sweater every day. She endures the scorn of Landon and his friends with a smile, always looking for the best in people. When a prank planned by Landon and his friend goes terribly wrong, the principal sentences him to tutoring on the weekends and working on the school play, activities in which Jamie is involved. As the two begin spending time together, Landon finds himself intrigued by this guileless girl who sees beauty in everything and exhibits unwavering faith in people and in the world. When circumstances beyond Landon and Jamie's control threaten their love, he stays by her side and does everything he can to make her dreams come true. Based on the best-selling novel of the same name by Nicholas Sparks, the film also stars Peter Coyote and Daryl Hannah. [More]

All of the schmaltz and manipulative melodrama will make this a walk you'll probably want to run through and forget as quickly as possible.

A story about intelligent high school students that deals with first love sweetly but also seriously. It is also beautifully acted.

Personally, I would have preferred a little more restraint -- a film less stacked in one direction -- but you can't deny that this little movie has a big heart that's in the right place.

A gob of drivel so sickly sweet, even the eager consumers of Moore's pasteurized ditties will retch it up like rancid crème brûlée.

The film follows their gentle courtship with such old-fashioned goodness that you can become a little misty.

A flawed, guilty pleasure, especially if you don't mind your movies extra sweet.

Could have been crisper and punchier, but it's likely to please audiences who like movies that demand four hankies.

The characters and situations are so cliched, you think you're watching a sequel to the holiday spoof Not Another Teen Movie.

Just when you think that everything has been neatly resolved, the movie drops a bomb that is jaw-droppingly cheap.

Since the movie is based on a Nicholas Sparks best seller, you know death is lurking around the corner, just waiting to spoil things.

In their zeal to create a character who embodies a wholesome, positive adolescent ideal, the filmmakers have invented an 18-year-old girl with no self-doubt, no emotional weakness, no character flaws, and a crystal-clear complexion.

There's not enough saccharine (even in this film) to flavor Moore's performance above bland.
