The real disappointment is that the film does not transport an audience to another world, as 300 did. Nor does the third-rate Chandler-esque narration by Rorschach help.
One of the most revolutionary elements of the novel was the depiction of superheroes as very human. They lived in a very real-world world, albeit an alternate history. Should it be disappointing that this film doesn't transport us to another world?
"Fight scenes don't hold a candle to Asian action." "The thing is, these aren't so much superheroes as ordinary human beings with, let us say, comic-book martial arts prowess" Didn't read the novel and was not afraid to ingorantly put the fact on display. Go see Street Fighter you MORON!
This was actually an awful review. He attempts to lend credence to his criticism via an exceptionally contemptuous tone and a complete misunderstanding of what he is viewing.
A negative review is typically far more insightful than a positive review, as the IGN review was, but this is merely garbage. The man's criticisms are juvenile (Dr. Manhattan looks like an Oscar Award? That's your big criticism? Wow.) and ultimately have next-to-no bearing no the understanding of the actual story.
There is nothing to recommend this critic's viewpoints, particularly after traversing through his past critiques. Quite awful.
Wow, You are a moron Kirk. Seriously how did you get hired? There's nothing wrong with a bad review, but everything you bash on it has far more to do with the graphic novel than what is in the movie. Seriously, who authorized you to review at this site.
You call Watchmen the first flop of 2009 - I have to call your review the worst review of 2009 - check your facts before you write something - it makes you look less stupid (friendly tip so you don't lose your job)
This is where we're going to see the biggest disparity by reviewers who have and have not read the novel. Thus far, it seems as though those who have read it tend to like the film, while those who have not, do not. We'll see if the trend continues...
I just knew this was going to happen the polls would go down and i think this is just the beginning with more reviews coming in. by the time its over it will probably be around 50-60% range because critics will be strict with this movie maybe even closer to 50%.
The reviews aren't going to get that bad, unless of course we have more people who decide to give bad reviews on a story they don't understand. Saying the set pieces and look are bland, poking fun at the fact that Dr. Manhattan goes to Mars, etc. just show how ignorant he is of the source material. From everything I've seen so far those items are exactly like the comic book.
The 300 was unable to produce visual stimulus. They used the same scene set the entire movie, overly played the CG, and the backgrounds looked fake. It's hard to judge a film when it hasn't hit theaters yet and the Watchmen should good similar in style to V for Vendetta since it's written by the same person.

"Snyder and writers David Hayter and Alex Tse never find a reason for those unfamiliar with the graphic novel to care about any of this nonsense. And it is nonsense. When one superhero has to take a Zen break, he does so on Mars. Of course he does."
This whole review is basically just immature pokes at the concept and story of the film, if you were going to do that, you could have written a review on the synopsis. Did you actually see Watchmen?
"but soon realize these back stories owe more to soap operas than to superhero comics"... I think if you can't write a review which goes deeper than the surface of the story you should stick to reviewing soap operas.
