Crudup to Join "Watchmen"?
by Jeff Giles | July 10, 2007
Blog Article | Discuss Article
Its release date is still listed as "TBA 2008," but director Zack Snyder's adaptation of Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons' classic "Watchmen" graphic novel is already kicking up all kinds of dust on the news/gossip circuit (as in, um, our very own newsdesk).

We've been breathlessly reporting on the early cast speculation -- Keanu Reeves is out, but Patrick Wilson is pretty much confirmed, and he just might be joined by Kate Winslet, Jude Law, Jeremy Irons and others. Among those "others"? "Almost Famous" and "Big Fish" star Billy Crudup.

Crudup in last year's "The Good Shepherd"

This news comes courtesy of CHUD, whose Devin Faraci reports that "a very reliable source" has confirmed Crudup's casting as Jon Osterman, the nuclear physicist who gets all blowed up and comes out the other side as the freaky blue-skinned super-being known as Dr. Manhattan. Names previously attached to the role have included Reeves and Jason Patric, but -- Reeves' natural gift for the wooden detachment intrinsic to the part notwithstanding -- Crudup might just be the best choice.

It's all still conjecture at this point, of course, but as CHUD notes, Snyder will be on hand at Comic Con at the end of the month, and is expected to make some official casting announcements. If even half of the names that have been floated for this movie end up actually signing on, "Watchmen" will give "Iron Man" a run for its money as next year's Comic Book Adaptation Most Likely to Be Thoroughly Awesome.

Takes a little while to get going...
Like a lot of Alan Moore's original stuff, it takes a little while to get rolling. It's a really heavy read, and resembles a novel more than MOST books that get slapped with the "graphic novel" tag. I imagine that a lot of the in-between stuff that bookends the chapters will get the axe in the movie version, but you could read the entire main story without it if you wanted to, as it mainly serves to just flesh out some of the stuff that's been touched on already. Still, it's pretty interesting if you're enjoying the book.

If you REALLY enjoy it, I suggest picking up the Absolute Watchmen hardcover that DC put out last year. It's 75 bucks, but well worth it if you're a fan.

I can't wait until more of the casting is announced and bits of what is or isn't making it into the movie start to leak out, so that Scott Weinberg can start quoting Wikipedia entries (he never seems to know anything about the actual comics themselves that are made into movies) before adding such stunning insight as "sounds cool", "this sucks", or "should be interesting".

The writers for this site (or copy-and-pasters) have it pretty easy. I wonder if they're hiring...

I just think "The Dark Knight" will be the better film of the three.

Yeah, I had the same problem w/ Watchmen, and V also; I didn't like either at first. It wasn't until the second time I read Watchmen that I realized it was the greatest book ever.

For the record, I am not Scott Weinberg. Also, I've read "Watchmen."

Yeah, I don't think either film will hold a candle to TDK.

And who directed Iron Man? Jon Favreau, the guy from Swingers? The guy doesn't exactly have a strong track record for hit movies. He makes very light, mediocre, PG-13 fare.

I know Weinberg didn't write this article, so I will keep my Weinberg-related gripes to Weinberg's articles from now on. It's much easier to discuss his less-than-spectacular commentary when his words are right there and others can see what I'm talking about.

Just because it ain't a hit doesn't mean it ain't good.
