Carla Gugino Calls Her Watchmen Role "A Challenge"

Says even the opening credits will be great.

Ask a dozen film critics to each make a list of the most underappreciated actresses working in Hollywood today, and the name "Carla Gugino" is likely to appear more than once -- but her turn as the Silk Spectre in Zack Snyder's Watchmen just might help her grab that elusive spotlight.

Gugino tells MTV Movies that what the role might occasionally lack in wardrobe, it more than makes up for in range:

"I start at 25 years old in the 1940s, and I age to 67 years old with full prosthetics in the 1980s...I kick a small amount of ass. I don't kick as much ass as some people do in the movie, however. But I get to play an old lady, which was just, for me, the most fascinating thing. To start as this young crime fighter and end up an alcoholic woman in her late 60s was for me enough of a challenge; let's put it that way."

Gugino also let a few details slip about Watchmen's opening credits sequence, which she describes as "extraordinary" and "a very, very special thing that wasn't scripted, that will be really empowering." From the article:

In those opening credits, Snyder is mixing CGI and real-life footage to establish the close-but-not-quite reality of a "Watchmen" world that mirrors our own. "It incorporates real history and the fictitious world of Watchmen, and so it's very cool," Gugino explained. "We meet Nixon and all sorts of people."

Please don't screw this up. In the comic books, Sally Jupiter does not kick *** at all (actually, her *** is kicked by the Comedian in a terrible rape scene).

In my opinion, Snyder should let this go and be replaced by Paul Greengrass again, but that's just dreaming.

WATCHMEN is my all time favorite book, and I am actually really looking foward to this movie. I love the photos they released, it looks alot like the book. I won't be to mad if they make it different then the book, if they just keep the main point of the book ittle be great. I love the cast, I like that Zack Snyder is directing, I liked 300 and Dawn of the Dead (pretty good movies, not great). I cant wait to see this. P.S. Carla Gugino is so HOT!

I'm a comic guy but was always a Marvel FanBoy. I've always heard how great the Watchmen book is and I'm actually interested enough that I hope to read the graphic novel. I hated 300 and thought it was just a video game disguised as a movie and that's being said because I expected a little something after a pretty well done Dawn of the Dead and considering the source material. Get it right Mr. Snyder. And yes I don't mind watching Carla Gugino onscreen even in alot of the crap she signs up for.

300 was *spot on* to the comic. With the exception of the added sex scene, that movie is more or less a panel-for-panel recreation of the comic book. That's literally all the comic book is: no depth whatsoever, just huge, incredibly gory fight scenes in beautiful, gigantic panels. I'm not saying you should like the movie-- I have no desire to see it again, either-- but I don't know what you were expecting. That movie was far and away the most faithful adaptation of a comic book I've ever seen.

But don't worry, Watchmen is a completely different comic book. A LOT more writing, a LOT more plot, a LOT more depth. They're almost polar opposites, really.

i loved watchmen and it is one of my all-time favorite books. there is not a whole lot of action in the book so i wouldn't mind if the movie added a bit. i also hate to see all this negativity about the film already. the movie doesn't come out for over a year, give it a break. i'm patiently waiting until then and have complete faith in snyder and the rest of the cast and crew

Alan Moore doesn't back any adaptions of any of his comics. Have you seen V For Vendetta,The Leauge Of Extraordinary Gentleman,Constantine,or From Hell? Not saying any of them are good(aside than V For Vendetta),but did you see his name in the credits anywhere, for any of those movies? No,you didn't. Because he wouldn't let them use his name. Anytime they make changes to his work, he just goes crazy. The guy is a great story teller, but he has a huge ego.

Well, would you want someone to talk about how much they "love" your work but would like to change a substantial amount of things? Alan Moore has every right to be pissed. I agree with PonchoE here. None of the films were faithful to the source material and all were rather mediocre, I think. It's a shame reading V for Vendetta and seeing the movie afterwards. They changed almost everything in the plot, character development and storyline. Only kept one scene (which is the best, actually): Ivy's "rebirth" or "transformation" or whatever you want to call it. The rest is utterly bad.
