Hours before, Ahmed witnessed their teacher threatening expulsion if Mohammed forgets his materials. With rebellious determination and fragile vulnerability, Ahmed disobeys his menacing mother and sets out for neighboring Poshteh. Traversing the dusty country roads and narrow streets that characterize the rural Iranian setting, Ahmed receives conflicting sets of directions, follows innumerable false leads, and faces one difficult, unhelpful adult after another. Kiarostami's masterful touch with directing children combines here with his supreme control of narrative structure to create an utterly compelling coming of age story.
