The first film in a series that would lead to LIFE AND NOTHING MORE..., WHERE IS THE FRIEND'S HOME? follows Ahmed as he tries to locate schoolmate Mohammed Reza's house, in order to return a lost notebook. Hours before, Ahmed witnessed their teacher threatening expulsion if Mohammed forgets his materials. With rebellious determination and fragile vulnerability, Ahmed disobeys his menacing mother and sets out for neighboring Poshteh. Traversing the dusty country roads and narrow streets that characterize the rural Iranian setting, Ahmed receives conflicting sets of directions, follows innumerable false leads, and faces one difficult, unhelpful adult after another. Kiarostami's masterful touch with directing children combines here with his supreme control of narrative structure to create an utterly compelling coming of age story. The central motif of the quest, familiar from other Kiarostami films such as CLOSE-UP and TASTE OF CHERRY, is seen here in miniature, reduced to its simplest and most heart-wrenching level. [More]

I highly recommend all of Abbas Kiarostami's films, but to start with I'd suggest Where Is the Friend's Home, the simplest and most moving of his films.

Kiarostami makes masterful use out of a complex landscape and winds up with a great, moving film.

The closest thing I've ever seen to an Iranian action film.

It's only because so many directors have done more with a similar set-up that Where is the Friend's Home? feels somewhat lacking.

Even though very little takes place, the eighty-three minutes seem to fly by in real time.
