I know that "The Philadelphia Story" is a beloved film by many people, but it would be far from my first choice. Perhaps, I have just seen it too many times (but what a cast). My first choices would be a toss up among Tracy and Hepburn's "Adam's Rib"; Audrey and Cary's "Charade"; Stanwyck and Fonda's "The Lady Eve"; and, of course the great Billy Wilder's "Some Like it Hot". Also, I would have added/substituted "Raising Arizona"; "Defending Your Life"; "Groundhog Day"; "The Purple Rose of Cairo" {Really, who else but Woody Allen could hatch a plot with the beleagured heroine falling in love with a 1930's movie character who pops out of the screen?); and "Tom Jones". I also love "Two for the Road", but it may be just too bittersweet to be labeled a comedy. (Reply to this) |
