New News on Pixar's "John Carter of Mars"
by Scott Weinberg | June 25, 2007
Discuss Article
The property's been bouncing around Hollywood for quite some time, but "John Carter of Mars" has finally settled at Pixar / Disney. Now the question is: Will it be live action or animated?

According to IESB.net, the answer is "both." Apparently Pixar is planning to do the live-action / animated combo that was made so popular in "Who Framed Roger Rabbit" -- and tons of movies after that.

The adaptation of the Edgar Rice Burroughs adventures will be delivered by the very busy writing team of Hawk Ostby and Mark Fergus. The flick is still a pretty long way off, but IESB was able to snag one extra piece of information: Fan favorite filmmaker Brad Bird ("The Iron Giant," "The Incredibles," "Ratatouille") will NOT be involved on "John Carter." (Bird will be working on the live-action "1906," a crime drama set against the backdrop of the 1906 SF earthquake.) Oh well. It'll still rock, I bet.

No Brad Bird? Well, this still has a strong chance at being great.

I forgot about the rumor that Pixar got involved with this project, then all the info on Wall-E came out, Mars seems to be popular with them nowadays.

What a strange path these rights have taken, it was about to go into production at Paramount with Robert Rodriguez but they stripped it from him when he quit the DGA, then they gave it Kerry Conran who made Sky Captain but nothing happened and their claim to it ran out and they didn't renew it. And that's just the recent attempts at it.

It will be Pixar's most adult-oriented movie.

I'd read some time ago that Jon Favreau was tapped to direct this, and that it'd be PG-13 in content. I just hope that Brad has the willingness to go for his pet project, Ray Gunn.

I hope they can pull this off...
To remain true to the novel, this movie should not be a sanitized, Kid-oriented version, nor should it be gritty and adult. Instead, it should be explicitly, yet endearingly, campy, like "Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow", but on Mars.
