Based on the best-selling biography by Richard Ellman, this unconventional biopic traces the brilliant, witty, and tragic life of Oscar Wilde from his rise to fame as a much-in-demand author and public speaker to his downfall and ultimate imprisonment for homosexuality. Irish-born and homosexual, Wilde (Stephen Fry, in a critically lauded performance) nevertheless takes a loving wife (Jennifer Ehle), with whom he has children. While married, he becomes aware of his true sexual identity after a chance encounter with an aggressive house guest. This leads to a very public affair with vain, rebellious young Lord Alfred Douglas (Jude Law), the son of the Marquess of Queensbury (Tom Wilkinson, IN THE BEDROOM). Despite an astoundingly successful writing career, Wilde's private life lands him in prison for "gross indecency," a synonym for homosexual behavior, which was illegal in England at the time. [More]

Reviews for Wilde
This tale about the genius of paradox presents its own curious puzzle: how a life of such epic passion and tragedy can elicit so little emotional pull.
A gelid, often charmless affair which flirts with us, but ultimately fails to consummate the relationship.
Call it “The Picture of Oscar Gray” or “The Importance of Being Overly Earnest.” Somberness aside, “Wilde” is still worth placing a green carnation in your lapel for and scampering off to see.
The closest thing the movie has to a point of view is a tendentious and mystifying voice-over, in which Fry reads excerpts from Wilde's fairy tale about a selfish giant who banishes his children from his garden.
A plodding, downbeat drama with all potential for mirth drained from it.
You would think the life of Oscar Wilde would lend itself more to film. Not so. This biopic is unfathomably boring and ultimately pointless.
Wilde is, laudably, not presented as a simple icon or martyr of the gay movement, but as a flawed, admirable, attractive, disappointing human being.
The style of art and wisdom the creators of this movie have used here rolls around to be one of the greatest and most sensational biographical images I have ever seen.
A tony biopic that manages to combine an upfront portrayal of the scribe's gayness with an often moving examination of his broader emotions and artistic ideals.
The film depicts the shadow side of yearning. When stoked by pride, it can lead to a headlong plunge into self-destruction.
Though director Brian Gilbert's name has hardly been a household word, his Wilde is conclusively the best of the three accounts of the author's life to date.
