Wish You Were Here features a smashingly good performance by Emily Lloyd as a spunky, erotic, and out-spoken teenager.

A high-spirited tale of a rebellious teenage girl in 1950s Britian who energetically flouts the repressive sexual mores of her working-class seaside town. 16-year-old Lynda enjoys shocking her neighbors with her foul mouth and lascivious behavior, but underneath her flamboyantly cheeky facade is a lonely girl still suffering from the loss of her mother at an early age. No one in the town understands Lynda's desperate need to challenge conventions -- least of all Lynda's widowed dad. When Lynda's reckless sexual adventures lead her into a dangerous relationship with an unsavory older man, her father is powerless to stop her. [More]

Reviews for Wish You Were Here
Lloyd is so fresh, so filled with fun and rebellion, that she carries us past the tricky parts on the strength of personality alone. It's one of the great debut roles for a young actress.
At times tremendously funny, but never humorous at the expense of its emotional core, Wish You Were Here is simultaneously nostalgic and in direct opposition to the way that nostalgia tends to coat the past with a layer of sugary sweetness.
Lynda is a rich, spirited creation, and Leland's work here, as both screenwriter and director, is sharp and evocative.
Both the character and the film are more affecting than they initially seem.
As the title indicates, it's a film about yearning for someone dearly missed.
While Leland's script is lively with British characters, his theme is growing tired: young spontaneity stifled by tradition-encrusted hypocrisy.
