Wolverine Cast Gets Bigger
Potentially a whole lot bigger.
Now that filming has finally begun on the first X-Men prequel, X-Men Origins: Wolverine, details of who will be joining Hugh Jackman on his latest trip down Adamantium Way are starting to come to light.
Details like, for instance, JoBlo's report that Danny Huston (30 Days of Night) is playing William Stryker, the U.S. Army colonel with an axe to grind against mutantkind. This news kinda-sorta adds weight to earlier reports that had Liev Schreiber playing Wolvie's arch-nemesis, Sabretooth.
And that isn't all: Not to be outdone, IESB has shared the news that Lynn Collins (The Number 23) has signed on to play Silver Fox, the hard-to-kill object of Wolverine's affections. If you've been paying attention to the rumors, Collins as Silver Fox comes out of left field; other reports had Maggie Q or Michelle Monaghan tabbed to take the role.
But wait, there's more! According to a member of SuperheroHype's message board community, Taylor Kitsch (Friday Night Lights) has joined the cast, too -- as Gambit, the card-throwing, stick-wielding Cajun anti-hero. The scooper claims that Kitsch has signed a three-picture deal.
Even Ain't It Cool News has gotten in on the Wolverine casting rumor fun, speculating that none other than Ryan Reynolds has been chosen to play the "merc with a mouth," Deadpool.
A final bit of Wolverine-related info comes from Film School Rejects, where "a very reliable source" has passed along an interesting, albeit spoilerish, piece of information about one of the film's possible villains. We're not going to share it here, but if you just can't resist, follow the last of the links below!

LordVapor writes: on Feb 19 2008 06:05 AM Like the casting so far...Not for sure if gambit being here will be a good thing, or a bad thing..... With his almost unlimited timeline, I would rather have seen a flashback of him and Cap together or something...from like WWII.... I think they picked the right type of charachter to play gambit...let's hope riggs learns cajun pretty quickly lol.. (Reply to this) |

John Z. Delorean writes: on Feb 19 2008 06:13 AM Gambit!? Why? especially a teenage gambit cause this taylor kitsch guy is like 26 but looks 16, can't wait for the horrible cajun accent. I still think the movie can be pulled off but the story is key especially with wolverines hundred different origins, I hope they go with the current James Howlett one. This should've had Nick Fury, Shield, Cap, Silver Samurai, and NINJAS! (Reply to this) |

dahluzz writes: on Feb 19 2008 06:29 AM they could put Maverick in this movie. i remember him being with Logan on the spec-ops missions. granted, that was the animated tv show, which had its share of inaccuraices compared to the comics. but still, he could be a good supporting character. everyone clamored for gambit, but more in the context of the X-Men movies, not so much in the Wolverine story. there's already plenty of mythology for Wolverine without throwing gambit into the mix. but hey, his power is cool enough to warrant his appearance, even if the accent will unavoidably be butchered. this one is starting to come together. gavin hood was a non-traditional choice, but i think he'll bring the realism . we'll see how far the studios let him go with the violence... TombstoneLawDog writes: on Feb 19 2008 06:32 AM WHoa!-- I'll be the first to admit when I was wrong, and I was pretty dam# certain that everyone who was tossing up 'gambit' as being part of this movie were just getting their nerd on. Did NOT expect Gambit to be in this movie... And now that I know he is, I have almost no opinion on it. Almost in that I hope to ever-lovin' f#ck that they don't put him in as the 'humanizing sidekick' or 'precocious younger mutant' role. Other than THAT, I have no opinion. I AM kind of pysched that Schrieber is now potentially back in the Sabretooth role... a cerebral Sabretooth... that could be pretty slick. (Reply to this) |

Elixor writes: on Feb 19 2008 07:19 AM Boo! Gambit does not belong in a Wolverine origins storyline. And a three movie deal?! Bad idea thinking three movies ahead on this one. If Gambit is placed in the movie as Wolverine's 'humanizing sidekick' or a 'precocious youger mutant' for that teen appeal, I'm going to puke. (Reply to this) |

dmez4life writes: on Feb 19 2008 07:50 AM You guys are just dumb. Gambit is the character that was left out of the first three X-Men movies and now that he is put into this one you guys are slamming him? Get a life and stop your complaining, you're a bunch of nerds who don't understand plots. Gambit is perfect because out of all the X-Men, he is the one that Wolverine hated the most and never trusted. Look out for all the twists in this movie cause now that Gambit is on board, anything can happen. Oh yeah, and I'm pretty sure the actors cajun was pretty good during the audition for them to choose him. (Reply to this) |

smi1ey writes: on Feb 19 2008 07:59 AM why is everyone so scared that Gambit is gonna screw this up?! this is hilarious, because all i heard for the first 3 xmen movies was "WHERE'S GAMBIT!?!?!11/" i think he's an awesome character. not sure how Kitsch will do in the role though. we'll see. agniyo writes: on Feb 19 2008 08:54 AM On topic: I don't see why everyone's so upset about Gambit? As I recall he was hugely popular in the mid-90s. And a non-sequitur: Anyone remember the beautifully painted Havoc and Wolverine mini-series, "Meldown?" I thought there were some really cinematic moments in that; I'd love to see some of that in one of the upcoming pics (too much to cram into this first one, I'd guess). (Reply to this) |

Pagliacci writes: on Feb 19 2008 09:44 AM I doubt the story for this will be real good. Also, Gambit in an X-Men movie would have been really good. He could have even been shown to woo Rogue, causing tensions between himself and Iceman. As much as I love the character of Gambit and have been wanting to see him on the big screen. . .I wish it wasn't on a Wolverine origin story. They had nothing to do with eachother before joining the X-Men. I'd hate to see Gambit being a part of Weapon X (Reply to this) |

mssk8erboy writes: on Feb 19 2008 11:55 AM Ugh... Ryan Reynolds is cool, but the rest of those suck. if gambit has to be in the movie he should be played by Josh Holloway (Lost) he would be awesome, although he might have to get into shape a little bit more. -MIKE (Reply to this) |
