Friday Box Office: "Break-Up" Scores $15.8M; "X-Men 3" Plummets

Surprise, surprise - X-Men's legion of mutants are no match for Jen and Vince! "The Break-Up" opens to $15.8M on Friday, according to Showbizdata.com. The badly reviewed anti-romantic comedy, starring Jennifer Aniston and Vince Vaughn, handily beats out the $10.2M take by "X-Men: The Last Stand" to take the top spot at the box office.

With $15.8M on Friday, "The Break-Up" could generate $40-45M over weekend; that's roughly twice what industry analysts have predicted. The film, billed as an "anti-romantic comedy," tells the story of a couple in the final death spiral of a relationship, the inverse of typical Hollywood rom-com fare. The film scored a lowly 33% on the Tomatometer.

With NOTHING else major opening, this film was completely setup for success....no matter how poor of a movie it is. People are going to it out of boredom and needing something to see, not because the movie is worthwhile at all because it is NOT.

I should have saw X-men. The break up was a very bad moive. People were walking out before the movie ended. I agree with people being bored. That is only reason why to see this stupid film.

the real news
I think the real news here will be how big of a drop X Men: The Last Stand is going to have at the box office. To go from 122 million one four day weekend to a 10 million friday? (that 10 million will decrease saturday and again on sunday) - I'm no mathematician, but thats a huge drop. It could be because everyone who really wanted to see the movie already has, but I have a strong feeling that it has to do with the negative reviews and especially the negative word-of mouth. A person who doesnt like a movie will tell more people that than a petrson who does enjoy it.

Yeah, from $45M last Friday to $10M this Friday is a very steep drop. Since it's not an opening weekend, it'll make more on Saturday though. It'll probably make around $30M when the weekend's over. Still, that's a plus 70% drop - from last week's $103M Fri-Sun figure.

Wow what a huge drop for X-men. Guess that everyone just saw it the first week.

I just saw THe Break Up and found it to be decent. I feel that it was marketed wrong. It was portrayed as a nonstop laughfest when in actuality, it was more of a relationship drama with a handfulll of laughs here and there to keep it from getting too depresing. Not an amazing movie by any stretch of the imagination but it was worth my money.

A predictably large drop for X-Men. What with it being a major blockbuster opening on a holiday weekend with mixed word of mouth, I don't think it's surprising at all.

The Break-Up, however, is doing better than I expected.

yeah, but that's typical. movies that open really big tend to drop pretty good by the second weekend. there's very little chance of the movie doing as much as business as it did opening weekend. or close to it. still though it's weekday sales are really good.

50% drop-offs from blockbuster openings is normal; 60% is bad; 70% is really bad.

not surprised by the x-men drop...afterall, last weekend was a holiday weekend. i still thought it would be number one this weekend. i guess the short attention span of the average movie goer has shifted to the jennifer aniston pile of poo. very surprising that this would make lots of money. romantic comedies don't usually do as well anymore. i just hope that new keanu reeves BIGGER pile of poo doesn't make more money haha.
the next big movie will obviously be Superman, but soon after that Pirates will take over.

People don't aknowledge the fact that, whether critics like it or not, we're kind of in a comedy revolution here with the group of guys churning them out. Vince, Owen, Luke, Ben Stiller, Will Farrel, Jack Black, Steve Carrell, and a few more that I can't think of right now. They have a huge fanbase, and make funny movies (most of the time). The Break-Up wasn't as bad as I thought it would be, with everyone bashing it. X3 was just depressing.

Plus, there hasn't been a romantic comedy in theaters in a while. It's great counter-programming.

i actually enjoyed the break up very much. it really did a good job depicting a lot of break ups of that nature, atleast for my experiences.

i love Vince and surprisingly jennifer was really affective. anyhow, we all knew Xmen was gonna drop but man to drop that low? it just goes to show.

Even if The Break Up trounces X-Men at the box office this weekend, X-Men is the kind of summer popcorn movie that'll still be holding its own in the theaters while The Break Up is being prepared for DVD release.

The break up is not getting good word of mouth by people who saw. Alot of people thought it was very bad. I saw it for my self and was mad. This was a very bad film. Not funny at all. The break up will do good on the first weekend but word of month will kill this film. And i will be happy when it does. X-men 3 was way better than this garbage

P.S this movie nly made 13 million on friday not 15 million. That is because so many peopel walked out and wanted there many back. Can you blam them.

That's to bad about X-Men. It doesn't supprise me that The Break-Up is making this much money, it's had a lot of publicity and it's the first full out date movie in a while. I gave The Break-Up a B, I thought it was pretty good, not great but I have to give them props for actually having the balls to end it the way they did. It really had way to much fighting and arguing to actually be that funny though.

What are people talking about. X3 has made 175 million in two weeks. X1 and X2 did not make that much in the first two weeks. X3 is still doing good.

P.S. the breack up was a bad movie.

i didnt forget about cars. i think it will do extremely well, and I hope it's one of the biggest movies of the summer, but judging from the gross of other computer animated movies, they don't make as much as they used to, probably because there are too many of them.
people need to lay off attacking x3, it's getting old

X3 is still doing good. How many movies can you say made 175 million in two weeks. X! or X2 did not. The break up is just doing good because word of mouth has not got out yet onm how bad the film is. Next week it will drop alot. The film was piss poor bad.

The Break Up was not a bad movie. It really was not. It didn't have a typical Hollywood ending, even when you thought it would, Vince Vaughn is awesome, Jennifer Aniston is hot, theres nothing not to like. And the movie was not setup for success. EVERYONE thought X3 would come in at number one over the weekend again. And EVERYONE thought it was a terrible idea, why do you think that there were no other big releases?
