Marvel Makes Plans for an "Avengers" Movie (Live-Action!)
I'm not even that big of a comic book geek, but when I saw that Marvel's new movie line-up included names like Captain America, Hulk, Thor, Iron Man, and Nick Fury, I thought to myself: "Hey, all those guys are members of The Avengers!" And guess what? Marvel knew it too, which is why they've announced a live-action "Avengers" movie!
From IGN FilmForce: "X-Men" movie vet Zak Penn will script the live-action feature film version of "The Avengers." Also on the radar for Penn is the Universal-based "Hulk 2," which is expected to be Marvel's second major release in 2008 after "Iron Man." Louis Leterrier will direct.
Key members of the production team for director Jon Favreau's "Iron Man" movie were named. J. Michael Riva ("Spider-Man 3") will serve as production designer, Oscar winner John Nelson ("Gladiator") will be the VFX Supervisor, and Matthew Libatique ("Inside Man") will act as the director of photography."
For more Marvel-ous info (including a little on "Ant-Man" and "Thor") click right here.
Franky, my brain can't even comprehend how cool an "Avengers" movie could be. All those superheroes on one screen might just overload my geek circuits.

t-joint writes: on Aug 11 2006 08:25 AM 1) Nick Fury was NEVER an Avenger. 2) Keep the bastardized "Ultimate" storylines OUT! 3) See number 2. With the Iron Man, Thor, and Ant-Man movies coming out, they just about have the entire original team in tact. All I gotta say to Mr Penn is... SEE NUMBER 2! (Reply to this) |

Banana Kid writes: on Aug 11 2006 09:59 AM Ultimates is incredibly well-written, incredibly well-drawn,has great action sequences, great plots...it has great everything. It's just about the best comic out there now. Shut your mouth. I would see this movie if it did take a page out of the Ultimates, since it just works better with the modern world. It could really lead to some interesting stuff if they worked for the government. Plus...you know...The Ultimates is better. (Reply to this) |

I Am Remote writes: on Aug 11 2006 10:07 AM "Ultimates" is not better. Anyone familiar with the original books knows that Ultimates, while being sharp-looking and modernized, is just cashing in on bandwagon Marvel fans flocking to comics since the success of "spiderman" and the first x-men film. They have some good moments in them, but for an adaptation, why would you look to another adaptation (the ultimates)? Go with the core stories that made these stories and characters successful in the first place. I was highly impressed with the first run of ultimate x-men "the tomorrow people" but after that, it got really ridiculous. Oh, and the best comic out there right now, in terms of new series, is Astonishing X-Men. (Reply to this) |

Reel 2/Dialogue 2 writes: on Aug 11 2006 11:02 AM In reply to this comment (#842022) 4. Keep Zak Penn away from this. Seriously, is he a contract writer for Marvel Productions? Doesn't Shane Black have a superhero story in him? I like the Ultimates cartoons, but if this movie deals with YET ANOTHER alien invasion... just no. Bring on Ultron!! (Reply to this) |

t-joint writes: on Aug 11 2006 11:16 AM In reply to this comment (#842023) Based on...? Saying a Johnny-come-lately Elseworlds rip-off is somehow superior to a product with over 40 years of established history is remarkably solipsistic and downright asinine. Read any of the "Kree/Skrull War", "Korvak Saga", "The Fall Of Hank Pym", or "Breaking Of The Avengers" storylines and then get back to me. (Reply to this) |

SozeStrangelove writes: on Aug 11 2006 11:51 AM In reply to this comment (#842028) So, by your rationale, Kingdom Come and Dark Knight Returns are Johnny-come-lately Elseworlds rip-offs? Despite the fact that they are actually some of the best graphic novels ever written? Im psyched about the movie. (Reply to this) |

t-joint writes: on Aug 11 2006 12:31 PM In reply to this comment (#842029) Wait... WHAT??? Are you being serious? No, really. If somehow you are, the answer to your query is no. First off, both of those limited series take place in the future, and do not parallel and/or attempt to invalidate or supersede pre-existing storylines. Secondly, they ARE Elseworld stories. dracus writes: on Aug 11 2006 02:08 PM I agree with t-joint and I Am Remote; if they're going to do The Avengers, stick to what made it such a great comic and base it on the original books. Do that and The Avengers will more than make up for what they did to The Fantastic 4. I remember as a kid I was more of a DC fan than Marvel, but like X Men, Spiderman and Fantastic 4, there was something special about The Avengers. As for Nick Fury and his Howling Commandos, feed those pussies to Sgt. Rock and Easy Company LOL. (Reply to this) |

Horstradamus writes: on Aug 11 2006 03:27 PM whoa Calm down there mega-nerds. You don't want to rip the tape holding your glasses together. This sounds like an okay movie. Perhaps they could write (gasp) an original script rather than rehashing some played out storyline. (Reply to this) |

Paul_Is_Drunk writes: on Aug 11 2006 03:48 PM Have you read the original Avenger stories? They don't even age well. Sure the stories that grew out of that were pretty good, and it had quite a long and interesting history... but none of that will translate to screen as it's an independent venture and it makes no frickin' sense to do an Avengers movie that has them all coming together because Loki wanted to kill Thor. (Actually, that being the general plot would work, but never-the-less the original stories won't work). Ultimates, by the way, is one of the most groundbreaking works I have seen come out of Marvel in a long time. It's not just people jumping onto comics from movies, which if you did any analysis you'll notice that they really aren't. Way to post your crap like it's fact though. (Reply to this) |

And what's this about an "Independent Venture"? And who says it has to be word-for-word from the books? Just throw Ultron in (making the Henry Pym character more interesting) and you've got your plot right there. (Reply to this) |

SozeStrangelove writes: on Aug 12 2006 01:09 AM In reply to this comment (#842030) You said Elseworld rip-off. In The Dark Knight Returns and its sequel "DKSB?", Dick Grayson was revealed to be a Joker ripoff that Batman later killed by dropping him into a volcano. If that does not "supersede or invalidate pre-existing storylines" i dont know what does. Sauce. (Reply to this) |

t-joint writes: on Aug 12 2006 09:33 AM In reply to this comment (#842039) Oh, wow, man, you're completely right! How could I miss that logic? It all makes sense now! Dick Grayson turning out to be the Joker in some possible alternate future timeline makes an Ultimate Avengers live-action movie seem COMPLETELY rational! Good lord.... (Reply to this) |
