A Smorgasbord of Magneto Details, Rumors, and Spoilers
Obsessed With Film has the scoop.

Blog Article | Discuss Article
Okay, so we know Wolverine is prepping production. How about the other highly anticipated X-Men spinoff, Magneto?

We've known for awhile that Batman Begins screenwriter David Goyer would be writing and directing Magneto -- and that it would function as a portrait of the supervillain as a young man -- but other details about the project have been relatively scarce. That all ended last Friday, thanks to the good people at Obsessed With Film.

You want details? They've got 'em. (They've also got about half a page of spoilers, so proceed with caution and all that.) Here's the stuff we can comfortably share: The movie will be an origin story, and will deal with early chapters in the lives of Magneto and Professor X. The article says Magneto will be similar in scale to "the first X-Men movie, but multiple locations and a period setting could knock the budget up significantly." (Among those locations, if Goyer has his way, will be Argentina and Europe.)

And how about the supporting cast of characters? According to the article, Professor X might not be the only familiar face:

Expect to see Senator Kelly return (a young and old version), along with mutants Victor Creed and Mystique.

I don't see much interest in this film to anyone but comic book geeks. It will bomb.

Can't wait, and not only because I like Ian McKellan. I'm looking forward to this more than Wolverine.

I think you're right CG. It's going to have to lots of action to get people in the seats. I'm a geek so I am interested though.

That's sweet that Mystique will be in it. Hopefully Romijn will play her again.

This film is "highly anticipated"? That's the REAL news to me...

'Specially with Goyer writing and directing it...

i doubt that this will have a lot of hype. I don't see the point of making a movie about megneto..and I will not be spending my money to see it

Last I heard Bucket-Head and Xavier were going to be played by Ian McKellan and Patrick Stewart with some cgi-touch up to make them look significantly younger.

I agree, I don't think it'll do that great commerically. I'm an X-Men fan and even I'm not the least bit interested in this film.

I still think Hannibal Rising was a decent supervillain origin story. If this is like that, then yes it might be cool. HR got panned though because I think critics were expecting something else... Silence of the Lambs maybe?

Magneto is a much more complex character than the traditional Hollywood treatment can offer, I believe. Elektra, anyone? This film will bomb, no doubt in my mind. The whole origin bit, though enticing, is just not an interesting enough element to draw forth crowds come opening weekend. I think we all remember *sigh* Ghost Rider...

As a fan of comics, I for one hate the X-Men movies and couldn't care less about this movie, or the Wolverine movie. If these movies are being made for comic fans, then they're failing. IMO these movies target people that think it's cool to see mutant powers on the big screen and don't give a damn about the comics. The stories are horribly condensed, the screenplays suck, and most of the characters are miscast, especially Magneto. Ian McKellen is a great actor, but he doesn't look anything like Magneto. Someone like a more fit Kurt Russell would've looked and fit the part much better.

i really dont understand why people thought that making a magneto movie is a great idea. i agree with elixor that magento was miscast according to the comic books, but ian mckellen did a good job with the role, and is probably the only reason any one would want to see a magneto movie.

this movie is going to suck and fail at the box office.

I'm highly interested in this film, and David Goyer is a great writer and a competent director (he's probably learned his lessons from Blade Trinity). With Ian McKellan and Patrick Stewart in it (along with other X alum) and properly marketed it could be up to a $100 million, which, if the budget is modest, would make a profit.

I dont know about this one. I agree it might have been a good idea to pick some one a little younger and more fit to play this role. Although he made it work with the first two films( I prefer to erase the third film from my memory altogether). I just dont know if there is enough interest in this I'm not that interested and I love the x-men.
